I don't know what makes you think that. I've driven dozens of 3rd gen Tacoma ( as loaners, test drives, drove about 6 in an afternoon with my service manager). They all had varying degrees of the problem. My last loaner was the only one that I had to really listen to hear (I'd settle for that). The rest were pretty obvious.

I'd argue it's a function of reporting it. Some people might not be able to hear that frequencies. Others might bump music and never notice. Then you have the guys with the lift kits, mudders, roof racks, lights, etc that probably only hear the roar of bro-ness driving down the road.

    I think it's more widespread than 50%.

My 2004 sometimes made a noise under these conditions but only when the weather was cold. Not a howl. More like a screech. There is a thread on here somewhere that diagnosed it.

I do t know what makes you think everyone who owns a 3rd gen are having these issues. I am not denying that these issues. They have been noted several times. At my work there are 3 people with 3rd gen tacomas including myself and I asked them having their differential howling they said no. One of them has 22,000 miles on their truck so it should have been prevalent on his truck by now.

This is affecting a 1/10th of the units that were bought about 20,000-30,000 trucks out of 200,000+ third gen models that were sold. Everyone expects these trucks to be flawless since we paid $35-40k OTD price for these TRD models.

Trade your truck already if you hate it. I wouldn't continue driving a truck that I hate for another day. I don't care if I was upside down on the truck, I roll the negative equity into my new truck to get the truck out of my life since you are complaining about it so much. No reasons to continue make payments on a "TURD" gen. Trade it in for a Honda Ridgeline already.:p

Naw, I'd rather keep complaining until Toyota fixes it.

When the math works and or I find something else I'll make a change.

... or, you could quit reading threads about problems that you aren't having, enjoy your truck, and leave us alone.

I think I'll agree with this. Either there is a dimension or assembly process out of whack, or the new housing has a resonant frequency that their NVH engineers missed. Hopefully its the latter.

*edit: I see you were responding to another post. But honestly...

    I don't get this post?

You don't have the issue, your friends don't have the issue...

Yet we should sell the truck because we don't like the rear end ringing?

I really like my truck besides the howling. I don't want to sell it, I want a solution to the problem.

Hence a thread to report the howling noise and/or solutions.

Not a thread for people without the problem to tell others to stop "complaining".

Well said, I would be complaining too about a SOLUTION if I had the howl and shelled out 35 to 40k also.

You care to post it. I'll send it to my service manager to see if he's interested in giving it a shot.

Also, what's the normal fix for pinion preload?

I wondered that too when I read his Post, maybe they put shims in and changed the driveline or pinion angle or something like that.

The thing that strikes me is that this is a pretty common thing to check and fix with the symptoms we are all having. A few mechanics on here have said this is the likely problem.

I'm just surprised his dealer addressed it. I'd like to know what they did (and if Toyota approved it).

I got the impression that my dealership service manager was having his hands tied and corporate wasn't authorizing fixes (I'm assuming he also thought this was the problem). That's why having a report stating the issue and the fix would be nice.

Exactly, having some paperwork to show your Service Advisor could definitely be helpful and maybe allow them to at least look at it a different way!
