This is cool - was able to order some just now. We host an apiary on our property and have spread wild flower seeds in various places so this will add to our project. My wife also has a vegetable garden and she raises flowers that she sells at a local farmer's market - more for fun then for any money. I think she made a total cash gain of $3 last year. :) Having the bees has meant that almost every flower gets pollinated - great for the garden and Lynn's business.

The bees here are a mix of Italian and local bees that we collected from a swarm that set up in one of our garages. They are not at all aggressive - generally will only sting when they feel threatened or just happen to get caught in your clothing, etc. In the 3 years we've had them here, I've only been stung once and I regularly cut the grass around the apiary.

This is a pic from when we expanded from 3 to 6 hives - we now have 10. We see them all over our property constantly and the hives have flourished, thankfully. ANd the honey is amazing. The electric fencing keeps our local black bears and the skunks out.

And here is my wife holding a hive cell after we captured a swarm from one of the garages. We found the queen on this cell so we knew we could relocate the swarm and integrate it into the apiary.

actually not corn because corn doesnt use bees to pollinate, it uses the wind. But there are plenty of other fruits and veggies that bees pollinate that we would have a hard time living without...

The link between neonicotinoid pesticides and bees colony collapse disorder has been debunked.

Junk science by an online author looking to make a name for himself. Look it up.

I plan on planting some clover grass this year as well. Low maintenance, a weed choker and on the plus side it has flowers for the bees.

I helped my grand dad rob a hive back in the 60s. Just once, bees got under my gear and I proceeded to leave a gear trail back to my grandparents house. My grandmother used Bengay to neutralize the stings.

I've got bees and really the first season is the only one that you mess with them a lot and feed them. After the second season, if they haven't swarmed, they will pretty much take care of themselves. You still need to inspect the hive for unwanted insects but that's it.

Most areas offer classes and there is more then enough info on the internet about beekeeping. It's just up to you to take the time, find the right info and what works for you and your bees

There are a number of reports that the "Cheerios seed" contains a number of invasive plants seeds. These plants are banned in a number of states and provinces. This MAY be a case of fantastic idea but poorly researched and therefore a catastrophic result.

I hope someone can prove this to be a false report but if true I hope it is addressed before any damage is done. Hopefully this idea can bear fruit without doing harm to our local ecosystems.

Wow that would suck if it's true! There's a list of plants they're packaging with the seeds but that doesn't mean anything. :(

what about winterizing? I thought there was something you had to do to watch for pests/invaders also that seemed like it was time consuming

Depends on where you live. I'm in Sc so not really to much you have to do. Upper states usually use heat wraps and blankets. All the prep you do in the spring and summer for pest, usually keep them good through the winter.
