It dawned on me that this site uses a lot of this:

I can verify that this is essentially the same procedure at a movie theater since I worked at one for a few years back in "the day."

    Ingredients:
Veg oil (can replace with mobil 1 synthetic for longer performance j/k)
Corn kernels (I have better luck with white kernels popping)
    Flavacol Seasoning Salt

    Step 1

Pour enough oil in the bottom of a dedicated popcorn pan (if you intend on making it more than once find a sacrificial pan that you won't have to clean each time you make it - you'll thank me later if you do this) that covers a kernel. Put the heat on high, and put a couple kernels in to let you know when the oil is hot enough.

    Step 2

Once those kernels pop, add salt and enough kernels to cover the oil - you'll see how much my amount makes and can customize it to how much you want and how you want it to taste (I'll add details on that at the end).

    Step 3

Spin the kernels around and keep them heating evenly. The more evenly they heat, the more will pop at the same time (obviously), but that will keep you from burning any. I like to use two pot holders that are also sacrificial for this purpose since they will inevitably get covered in oil.

Keep shaking the popcorn as it begins to pop to keep it from burning and to make sure the unpopped kernels remain at the bottom.

    Step 4

As the popcorn reaches the top of the pan, have an overflow bowl ready - it should have a significantly larger diameter than the pan to make it easy to pour. You only need this if you want to make a lot like I do. With the overflow bowl just pour out enough popped kernels that will make it easy to keep popping the rest - may be half of the popped kernels in the pan. Then put the pan back on the stove.

You can easily make a smaller amount that will not fill up the pan, but since I'm on TW a lot, I like to make a lot ;)

    Step 6

Enjoy! Use a dedicated popcorn eating bowl or bowls since the oil will cover them eventually anyway.

Now, if you really want this to taste like movie theater popcorn, you must add way more oil and salt than is necessary and let it sit for about an hour before eating it (longer is better). Movie theaters make huge batches of popcorn as soon as they open and in between customer rushes so they won't run out, therefore the popcorn you're eating may at least be in part old and starting to get stale (which I actually prefer the taste of over freshly popped - but that has its perks too such as the heat and melt in your mouth texture). That's a wrap!

We bought one of those home theater popcorn cabinet things. Works really well, just as good as you get in the movies as long as you use the same stuff they do. I would like the bigger one one year when we build out a media room again (had it setup at our old house) sitting in our garage right now. :)

That looks dam d'licious man but how do you get those cheap-ass kernols to puff up? All I can find in the grocery is jolly-time and it makes shrunken little half popped tooth bustin' corn. What am I missing?

Heat. Lots of it. My stove isn't a professional stove or anything so I put the burner on max. The more oil you put, the easier it will be to get all of the kernels to pop. There's a balancing point where you get all the kernels popped, but it doesn't make the popcorn too greasy! I just get the generic kernels and I'm sure they probably all come from the same place anyway.

Ah - I gotcha, so I have a electric glass top that cycles on and off even on high. I throw a pot on there and shake the hell out of it once it starts popping. Maybe don't have enough oil going.
