Hi. Im new to the 4.0 engine and its got alot of clack and chatter going on. You hear it while accelerating with windows up as well. Sounds like valvetrain ish noise when idlibg and like an exhaust leak when accelerating. Ive read about the 4.0 tick but many didnt describe it as being this bad. I just bought the truck for top dollar with 67k miles ajd im gonna drive it daily for hopefully 10 years. I have a 90 day dealership warranty on the drivetrain. So if its not normal i need to know. They probably didnt use synthetic oil and its not an oem filter (got it from a Ford Dealership) so maybe thats making the noise worse? Any help is appreciated. https://youtu.be/jZ9oSNMAaSw

Different classes of vehicles are engineered to different NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness) standards, with various design compromises made in compliance with each class' NVH goals. As things go pickup trucks are not held to as rigid an NVH standard as say a Lexus--masking normal engine noise was probably not at the top of the list as our trucks were conceived...

I've owned 7-8 different vehicles, and i'd say the tacoma probably has the noisiest engine of all of them.

I do not find my '09 4.0 (w/ 138k miles) to be especially noisy as compared to the 25 or so others I've owned over the years...

Mine sounds like that too. Like a ticking.
I've put something like this in there with my motor oil and it was quieter, but came back after an oil change. Wasn't really worth it for me.

Sounds normal to me on this truck, has been noisy since new.
Might be Toyota thing. I remember having my mechanic adjust the valves on my old 22RE pickup to make it quieter but it ran better when noisy and chattery.

Mine has sounded like a sewing machine since the day it rolled off the lot. The noise is loudest on cold start-ups.

Hopefully it's normal...mine makes quite a bit of noise as well for 80000 kilometer engine..pretty disappointing for the price they aks for these trucks..

They are so loud it sounds like death is imminent. Yet they can go for 400k or more miles. The Tacoma Paradox.

What year is the truck? If it’s a true tick, that is just valve noise and totally normal.

If it sounds like a clatter under acceleration that’s probably pinging -

12-15’s have a TSB for a mapping adjustment to reduce that.

If you have a 5-11 you can unplug the battery, clean the maf/tb to clear it up for a while (or run premium.) that’s what worked for my 11.

Yup, it sounds like an old Mercedes diesel.
The only difference is that it’s not consistent. The more you pay attention to it, the more different noises you hear.
I am OCD when it comes to my cars. The Tacoma is helping me getting rid of my condition :D

The ticking sound is from noisy injectors from what I’ve read on.

The Tacoma 4.0 will sound crappy longer than most engines sound good.

My 2012 Prerunner 4.0 sounds like needle gun on a steel deck plate. I’m exaggerating of course, but the 4.0 definitely taps like Fred Astaire. Perfectly normal. It’ll still be tapping when most engines are dying.

Has anyone noticed the noise level changing with different types of oil? I just put Mobil1 in and I swear it got louder.
