I need advice dealing with a neighbor using my address to sell his crap on Craigs List.

Background: I live in a residential townhouse on a corner end unit. On our street all of the houses have their own driveways.

Recently a guy moved in to a unit that was recently sold. I'm almost positive he's a renter or subletting from the initial "owners" that moved in. About a month ago I noticed this new neighbor guy selling stuff to a dude parked on the side of my house. He was a sketchy guy. They got into an arguement before they closed the deal. I watched the whole thing go down and by all appearances it looks like the neighbor was selling cell phones or some sort of electronics devices in new boxes.

After the deal was done I burst out of my front door to catch this "neighbor" at the front of my house. I essentially asked him WTF are you doing? He told me he makes a living selling stuff online and he sells cell phones. I indicated that it's all fine and dandy but you aren't gonna do it in and around my property when you live two doors down. I also told him that it's dangerous to sell stuff and have people come around where you live. People with common sense meet at a designated public place, not a private residential community. It's damn unsafe in this day and age. Then I called him out that I don't appreciate him doing this around my property.

He apologized and seemed sincere and sincerely ignorant of the dangers. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Fast forward a month later to today and a big ass commercial vehical with a couple of sketchy dudes in it are parked in front of my house waiting on something. After about 5 or 10 minutes here comes this dumbass neighbor kid with boxes of cell phones. Haggling/arguing going on, Money is exchanged, the whole friggin' nine yards...in front of my yard, my house, my address.

At this point I'm livid. It seemed this guy cut this out from our last confrontation...but here we go. By the way his driveway was free and clear.

After I cooled off I went and banged on the door of the dwelling from which he seems to be living/renting/squatting at. I let him know once again that I don't appreciater him putting me and my family at risk here and I reiterated our past conversation. This time I let him know that he is choosing to put himself at risk and that it seems clear that he is using my address. I told him that the next time I'm getting the police involved and he'd better hope he's not selling stolen merchandise.

My question is simple: is there anything I can do to keep this guy from using my address and the area around my property as a meeting place for this Craigs List type of selling?

I'm convinced he's giving out my address and he is obviously going out of his way not to be around his house.

This is an area that has a homeowners association and the streets are privately maintained, which means our county and state taxes don't go to the maintenance of our residential streets. Instead the homeowners fees pay for our street maintenance.

Also the curb in front of my house and on the side of my house is painted bright yellow and has "No Parking" sprayed in black lettering.

I'm really concerned that some scumbag is going to assume this idiot lives at my address if they decide that they got ripped of or if they get the bright idea to come back and rob the place.

I get the feeling that the do nothing homeowners association is going to say this is a police matter, and the po po is going to say he isn't doing anything illegal.

Apologies up front for the wall of text here, but I'm at my wits end.

That's exactly why he's doing it. I'd call the police and get their thoughts on the situation. Even if they can't do anything they may have some advice.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I'm going to show up at the precinct to present my case to them. The only way this guy can be selling new electronics at bargain prices that makes people come out of the woodwork is if it's stolen merchandise or counterfeit.

This guy is going to have a whole neighborhood hating him.

Talk to the cops and if nothing with them, call the actual owner and notify him. CAD is public information and could be looked up relatively easy. Also it doesn't sound like cell phones even if you see a box. Trust me I was 18 one time.

What is CAD? Is that a property owner search?

Yes, county appraisal district. It's all online and free, I have to look up customers when they give me bullshit and I pull them up on there in 2-3 minutes

I'd suggest getting cameras asap so at least you document what's going on. I have a feeling your HOA and Law Enforcement are going to say that it's happening in 'common area' and not your property and can't do anything about it unfortunately. Maybe look at the the cc&r's and bilaws for your HOA and see if there are any restrictions on running a business from those homes?

And like @NEWBIETACO said, I'd find out who owns that unit and get ahold of them. In my county you go to the assessor's website and do an address search.

@InfernoTonka what is your problem, and what business is it of yours if he runs a small reselling business out of his home. He obviously has some rental agreement for that townhouse with someone WHO IS NOT YOU. What happens outside of your walls are not under your control, get off your pedestal and go work on other things in the world to hate. From what you are describing, you are all sharing a street that leads to your townhomes, you should move to the middle of the desert if you have issues with people using public space within sight of your home.

Also what is sketchy about this 'scumbag' and the people he associates with? Are they the wrong color for the neighborhood? You have not mentioned one thing he is doing that is illegal other than being in your line of sight. If you do not like it, then move.

I seriously doubt you ran up to his door and banged on it. If you didi he would be well within his right to have you arrested, as he could make an argument that he was in fear for his life form the irrational way you have handled this.

Good advice. This guys a real shitbag...his car that he drives is such a POS that I'm surprised it's street legal.

I could probably make it hard for him to settle in and be comfortable on the block if nothing else works. I work from home so I can clear my schedule to deal with him.

I don't hold it against someone for "getting by" in this economy, but this guy claims he "makes a living" at selling crap this way. Then you look at his car and think his standards must be low. Then again it's different when a responsible adult talks about making a living versus a smart alec teenager.

I sell stuff on Close 5 and Offer Up and I would hate to live on that. I also have enough sense to meet up with people away from my house.

A few things you may consider.

    Cameras....even if they don't work.
Security system signs in the yard.
    Motion activated lights.
Interior lights on timers so it appears someone is home and moving about.

Were it me, I would have a giant sign with an arrow pointing towards his place in the yard.

Could always create a post on Craigslist stating that the neighbor is selling junk and is ripping people off.
Can make his potential clientele go elsewhere.

If he is selling stolen merchandise and you let the cops know something fishy is going on they might be able to link him to stolen shipments or missing merchandise.
