The motor isn't going away for this size truck but you'll probably see more gears.

Like it or not expect even more shifting.

I don't think the motor NEEDS to go away. In front of a MT, I'm pretty satisfied with it.

More gears would be okay too, just as long as the truck has enough power to pull itself through all of them without driver intervention. My wife's little 4 banger Fusion has 6 gears, and that car doesn't need to hunt ever.

I'd love to actually find one of these tacomas with shifting issues and drive it to see the difference.

Drive any 2nd gen at 75mph down the interstate... then drive your 3rd gen. You'll figure out what we mean.

Mine drives fine, if there's a headwind or undulating terrain and it wants to upshift or downshift I bump the shift left to S then bump forward once to S5 and turn it into the same 5 speed as a 2nd gen. Once the terrain smooths or headwind diminishes I can either leave it like that, bump it again fwd to S6 or bump right to D and continue on. Hardly feels like I'm rowing the gears or really inconvenienced.

Truck has 16k miles and I use D 95% of the time. If I want to use cruise I might toggle between S and D more frequently just because it seems to shift more with CC on than if I just squeeze the throttle.

But for some that might be unacceptable.

I wish I knew what department store Toyota gets their so called Case Managers from? I had an open case about engine surges and transmission clunking and I was told since I had previously owned a couple of Gen 2 Tacoma's prior to my 2016 I need to be more patient with my 2016. What nonsense!!!!

I would say for a good majority of people that is unacceptable. Where I live there is ALWAYS a headwind and undulating terrain. You use D 95% of the time... I would have to use S 95% of the time. That's an inconvenience, considering I'd have to pay more for an auto.

And I'm not opposed to using S or selecting my own gears in an auto... when I'd tow in my 2nd gen I'd stick it in 4th. When I took my 2nd gen or wifes car to the Black Hills it's easier to get around if you don't use D. But if I had to get in a truck every day an mess with S mode, I would just buy a MT... which is what I did.

You guys that are saying this transmission has "no issues" are as ignorant as the guys who say "this is a huge pile of..." It's all about how you drive and where you drive. A lot of people have discovered it doesn't work for them.

I'm taking it up a notch and filing a complaint with an arbitrator not affiliated with Toyota. Here's the number: 888-300-6237

Oh... I should add that unfortunately a lot of guys are taking this transmission issue to the dealer and demanding that the transmission get magically regeared. Meanwhile the dealers and Toyota were never straightforward with how these trucks run to begin with.

It's a huge pain in the butt.

^^^^^^well said. I have the same issues as OP its been to dealer twice had tsb done first time and as others have said it's worse. Went back tech took my truck for two days said he felt it first day but couldn't duplicate it, imagine that. I think I'm going to try another local dealer and see what happens there.......

And to the guy who said drive a 2nd gen down the freeway at 65-75 then drive a 3rd gen at 65-75 down the same highway and you will feel the difference could not have said it better, it's day and night.

Again its hardly an inconvenience, it's just another mode available depending on the driving condition you find yourself in. Just because you don't like a characteristic of a design doesn't make the design a failure.

That's why you can choose a manual, a Nissan, a Chevy, or something completely different. Not everything drives the same and what might be perfectly acceptable to some would be intolerable to others.

Although I own a M/T for another car I don't drive it everyday due to the stop and go of my regular commute. The A/T in my truck works just fine especially after I determined how to configure it for all driving circumstances. I don't have to settle with just one mode (D) for everything.

What kind of BS is that, don't tell me that yota might have screwed up my truck, I don't know how you could trust that dealership. I would for sure have yota on the phone.

Ya especially when you tell a Toyota, so called case manager that your truck clunks when coming to a stop and the dash rattles like a MF'r and your told it might be a "characteristic" of the vehicle" A dash rattle, really !

Did you not read the post? I said it's not an inconvenience for YOU but it would be to me. In that case, it IS a failure because, had Toyota not offered an MT, I'd have sold my 2nd Gen and bought a Ford...

The real issue it the truck works the way it was designed... the way it is designed doesn't work for most people.
