2017 TRD Pro - Need advice on lift/level & wheels/tires & bumper insert.

Greetings! Let me start off by saying that I WILL NOT BE CHANGING the SUSPENSION that came with the truck. 2017 Toyota TRD Pro - Concrete grey w/Color Keyed rivet fender flares, bug deflector (AVS) and predator steps

I am looking to lift/level the truck and have a beefier/off-road look & capability while not sacrificing too much gas economy and ride.

Here's what the local off-road truck store is recommending:

Lift/Level:
Readylift Toyota Rock Warrior 2.75-3.0 leveling kit (SKU: 66-5912)
Then a 2" lift kit once leveled (level front end, then lift whole truck)

Tires:
Nitto Ridge Grappler - 285/65/18 *need new rims with this one, preferred tire

BFG KO2 - 275/70/16 or 285/17/16 *this one I would not need new rims

Wheels/rims (looking for rims that don't wash out in the tire, but still highlight some of the cement grey color; basically a somewhat blacked out look):
Looking for wheels/rims that will last and provide a good look to the tires, etc.
1st Tier:
SOTA: AWOL 6 Anthrakote or SCAR 6 stealth
2nd Tier:
Fuel: Coupler; Hostage III, Recoil (Matte Black), Savage (Gloss Black), Trophy (forged or anthracite w/black ring), Vector (anthracite).
3rd Tier:
Wheel pros: XD 127 Bully (matte black w/black ring), XD 829 Hoss 2 (gloss black), Moto metal 970 custome (gloss grey w/black).

Additionally add-ons:
-Amp Research power retractable steps
-C4 Fabrication Lo-winch bumper (debating on the winch or not) w/bull bar & Line-X coated
--30" Driving Combo LED light bar
--Baja Design Wiring Harness
--Smitty Built X20-10 Comp Gen2 Waterproof Winch w/Synthetic Rope and Aluminum fairlead, 10K

Thoughts? I'm not a big mudder, so sometimes to get me out of a jam and I may do a little mudding. Not sure if I need the winch ($500 savings) and want to ensure that I make the truck look good, still perform/ride well, and not mess up the current suspension/rock crawl features. Any advice on wheels/tires (durability/look) and lift/level (what's too much, what's not enough - wear/tear on components; effects on TRD tuned suspension, etc.) are appreciated. Thanks!

 

So wait you are leaving the TRD Pro suspension on the truck and then want to add the other stuff on top of that? And garbage spacers to boot?

So you want to put a spacer lift on top of a lift you already have?

 

You do realize that defeats the whole purpose of the Pro Suspension right? Leave it alone.

 

I'm not aware of the stock TRD Pro having a lift. I'm looking at lift/level what is stock to raise it approx. 2" and then 1" with the tires. Make sense?

 

Buy 275 or 285's and call it a day

 

Zach MX, not trying to mess with the suspension, just give it a little height and larger tires.

 

You can throw performance and nice ride right out the window with your plan. In fact you need to do more research before posting it sounds like. Keep the stock suspension but lift it 5 inches in the front and 2 in the rear?? That sounds horrendous and will look absurd. In fact it doesn't even make sense to lift a truck with blocks like that. All so you can have a sweet looking mall crawler? The more I type the less I understand what you're wanting to do.

 

Search the cement thread, or pro thread. Once adding some nice tires the truck looks more aggressive and no need to lift it.

 

Hey man.

The stock TRD Pro has a 1.5" lift over the others in the line. Also has a great suspension set up. If you put spacers in, you will affect your ride greatly! It will be much better left alone. Spacers will always make the ride rough and low quality.

For inserts, @RelentlessFab has a front bumper insert that is super nice.

This is why I am posting to see if there's a viable way to reach my goal. I'm looking for a 2" overall lift (spacers I would presume). Thanks for the note on the spacers. The way they explained it to me is that I would need to level it, then lift it.

Thanks for the info sixthsnail on the fabricated front, looks like the C4 line, except the bull bar is a little higher. I'll check it out.

From what you guys are saying, buy the bigger tires, maybe swap out the steps for AMP research (or not), then put the insert in and call it a day. I'm trying to trick out the truck while having the ability/capability to go off-road if needed or I find a good place...make sense?

Then why did you buy a pro? By throwing a spacer lift on top of you're pro suspension your actually making it less capable, more stress on strut, less travel, etc.

The second part of your original post was not trying to change gas mileage or ride but are talking about 285 or 275 rated tires which will definitely change both.

Most of us here have a lot of experience with these trucks. What you are asking dosent make any sense, change the PRO suspension without changing it to stuff bigger tires and get a certain look without changing the handling/ride/gas mileage.

You would have been better off buying a TRD and lifting it with KINGs, ICONs, etc to achieve what your looking for. Maybe brush up in the suspension thread, do some research, lots of threads and discussions on this. Since you have a pro leave the suspension alone. Stuff whatever tires you can in there with your choice of wheels and call it a day.

 

All this flack you are getting is for a good reason! As the other post have said if you add spacer it will adversely effect the current suspension on the Trd Pro's. Yes, it is a lift, a lift from the factory. Spacer will destroy the functionality of what the Pro suspension was designed for. I'm not being negative, it's your truck, do what you want. If you add spacers it will be a mall crawler though. If you never go off-road then you're in the green.

Trust me I've researched lifting the Pro without changing the suspension and it's not possible. The only option out there is spacers in the front and a rear shackle flip kit. The problem with that is the rear shackle flip kit raises the truck 2.5" while you would never want to add a 2" spacer in the front. You're just asking for a major problem. Your only options are leave it or get entirely new suspension.

The TRD pro is very capable off road. If you add spacers, the ride will get rougher and it's off road capabilities will actually diminish.

 

There's one of the trucks I was referring to. Those are 285's correct?

 

I bought the TRD Pro b/c I liked the color, reviews, and capabilities. This is my fourth Tacoma; I've been away from the community for a while three years in another vehicle (had a 2011 Taco that I did exactly what you are suggesting). I'm asking for recommendations/suggestions here to "catch up" if you will. I don't have a lot of time to research as much as I would like, but am asking the "experts" for help. I appreciate the responses so far and figured I would get some lashback for even proposing such a thing. I got the same feedback when I took my 2011 and put a sport hood and color keyed mirrors on a TRD Off Road. (Liked the look of the Sport, but the functionality of the Off-Road).

I'll do more research, just seeing what you guys have experienced/your thoughts.
