Yup. And a resort dude I shall remain. I'm trying to manage a schedule for 3 of jobs, an acct job at hotel/resort, another basic bitch pt acct job at JHMR (to get my foot in the door) and a ropes course guide at my current resort. If I get really lucky, I'll do 5 10s and have 2 days a week off.

A week into my current pt acct job I've already been offered a full time staff acct position...and at the rate things change I could be an asst controller within a year lol. But I don't really want 40 hrs of desk job right now. I'll go bat shit crazy

 

Wouldn't be broke though. Demand vacation days haha

 

I hope it goes without saying that all my jabs are in good fun. It's just life that all the desirable locations are cost prohibitive, Jackson, Monterey, San Diego/Del Mar/La Jolla/Encinitas. For all the negatives I haven't been able to bring myself to leave in the last 15 years, something about the Tetons just feels like home. Some of us are just doomed to act against our best financial self interest

 

its jackson, ill still be broke. especially after i outfit my stash of gear...need some upgrades in the bike, climbing and rafting department these jobs should be pretty flexible, so if i wanted longer weekends every so often it shouldnt be too hard to do.

true that.. its why its so hard to live any of those places. theyre rad and everyone wants to give it a try. psshh against financial best interest. you can say that again!

Calling all wood choppers and splitters. I am considering adding a nice axe to my tool kit. Thinking about a medium length one. Not going to carry a longer one. Thinking 25" or less. It would primarily be used to split already cut pieces.

I am curious about two things. One is the appropriate length and the other is the brand/quality/price point.

I was looking at these two Fiskar axes. Both are 23.5" but there is a 10$ difference in price. The one labeled as a 'splitting' axe (X17 model) cost more that the one labeled as a 'chopping' axe (X15 model). Wondering what the difference is other than price. Is there an added value that I'm not understanding?

I am not very experience with splitting but don't want to be caught without something when out on my adventures. Up until now I've always relied on others to do this when camping out in the wilds.

 

Difference is the head for the first too.

A splitting head is heavier and wider vs a thinner head for chopping.You can see how the splitting head has a wider flare on it to help split the log.

You'll want the chopping for cutting up kindling

The one i bought on our last trip was the x15. Love it. My old one was a 36'' one with the splitting head.

the shorter one is the same..just..well..shorter. I think you'll be perfectly happy with the shorter one. I choke up on my handle a lot to split kindling.

 

just saw the 17'' is a splitting head..do they have a chopping head for that one?

 

guess not..just a 14'' hatchet.

Which would work but if you have to split whole logs id go for the x15. Plus it can put holes in your leg

 

I don't think so. The only 17" I've seen is the X11 model

 

Nice axe and Fiskars are mutually exclusive.

 

I wondered if this is the one you got. I thought it might be. It looked like it did fine for splitting even though Fiskar considers it a chopping axe. And it is cheaper...

 

The chopping head is huge. You don't need it. The chopping one is good for what we are doing. I really really like that axe. Good size, sharp, light, yet strong.

 

eh, i don't think a splitting maul is necessary. Not for cutting what we are. The axe i have now did great and was usable easily for all purposes of splitting logs and making small kindling.

Chainsaw is important though for downed trees.

 

The problem with a chaisaw is carrying it. I am already maxed out on capacity.

I am confused by this. The splitting head is bigger. Did you mean to say that?

Putting in the OSK would be ideal but no way I can fit it in mine, no matter how compact it is.

Also, if you are referring to space under the bed rack, that wont wok either without raising it and I'm not going to do that either. There is very little spare space any longer when I carry the fire ring.

Not that hard to split with an axe. Just drop your hips.

Maybe for a masculine women such as yourself its a challenge though..

Splitting heads are heavier and wider compared to a chopping head.

Another brand to look at is Estwing. I have the 14" hatchet (I think) and it rocks. Haven't needed to sharpen it in years. It's all I have ever used to collect Fire wood when truck camping and I am guessing their longer versions would be just as good, if not better at that.

As far as bringing a chain saw, I think it's overrated. Just get a collapsible hand saw. I use a Wyoming saw for gathering wood for the tipi when backpacking. it makes quick work of smaller trees. My buddy has a larger version from another brand that is even better. They pack up next to nothing and could easily be added to any rig. A chainsaw may be faster but I don't feel like lugging one around for the small chance a tree is blocking the path. In most cases you can move it with a winch or get a decent workout with that new axe.
