Selling/Shipping advice

Not sure which one I agree with. Also, check the regional forums and you can try local sales.

 

When someone asks for a shipping quote what do you normally do? Ask for a preferred carrier? Does buyer send money before you ship or vice versa?

 

Plenty of scammer sellers too. I wouldn't buy from someone if they insisted only family and friends, because then they can start to pull the "dude I totally forgot to ship it I've just been sooooo busy!" line and/or pull one of these:


and you have literally NO way to get your money back because PayPal does not do dispute resolution on family & friends. At all. Once the money is sent, tough shit.

While I agree that paypal does tend to heavily (& possibly unfairly) favor the buyer in disputes, you should have at least a tracking number. Un-tracked shipping is where the scamming pays off.
If you really want to be 100% protected, get signature confirmation. If PayPal sees they've disputed something they've signed for, they aren't going to get away with that. However, my understanding is usually a valid tracking number is enough.

I used to pack it up & weigh it and ask for their ZIP, however that bit me in the ass when I learned that many carriers change prices within ZIP codes and I got reamed on shipping a set of wheels.
I now ask for full address, and plug the package info into the UPS / FedEx "get a quote" thing online.

Generally speaking, accepted practice is you get the money and then you ship. Just like buying anything else online. You wouldn't expect a vendor to ship you something before you paid, so why do it with private party?
If the seller doesn't ship, you can open a dispute... unless you used friends & family and then you can't!

 

What do you think is usually cheaper? Fed Ex, UPS or USPS? I have a buyer for both my tail lights and stock grille and don't want to be driving all over the place trying to find what's cheapest haha

I've been having issues finding the right size boxes for a lot of stuff. Can usually find proper sizes online but there's always a min order of 10 or so.

Where the hell do you guys find a good selection of boxes? Half tempted to just buy giant sheets of cardboard and make my own.

 

I was going to get one of those moving boxes and make it the shape of whatever I need haha

 

OP, I recommend you ship those items via UPS Ground w/ Signature required.

Yep. That's the danger of joining. You start looking at all the cool stuff people do and you think, "I want to do that." And so it begins.

 

Amazon. Every time I buy something, it comes with a free box. Be sure to buy different sized items.

 

I always get quotes from the big 3: USPS, UPS, and FedEX. Just package it all up, punch the dimensions into the site and add their zip code. I've never heard of the shipping rates changing within a zip code, but it sounds like that could happen.

I'm the same way! I just bought 48 rolls of toilet paper because I didn't want to go to the store.

 

Ditto. I use Prime Now to deliver dog food. I usually add some other non-essentials. The dog food is way cheaper than the pet store, even with driver tip. It's the best.
