Did see a thread from 2009, thought I's start a new one about this. The 2006 Tacoma is white and the discolored/mold like edges of the rear qtr panel clear stone guard film looks bad. I have gone the rout of a heat gun, goo gone and some other solvents. It was taking forever and still looks bad, The 3 M film is really not coming off. I spent hours on the one side and still not off. If I could get it off I know where to get it but think I'd just leave it off at this point.

Also question about ways to repair cuts/scrapes in the front colored bumper. Got a couple that people were nice enough to do in parking lots.

Just checking back in, see if there is any info on this issue. They look worse now.

A tint shop can strip them off for you

PackCon, Yep it needs to go somewhere, I was not getting it done. Thanks. Had not thought of a tint shop, or I guess someone who does wraps. I think getting them off, cleaning up the area and leaving them off.

This seems to be such a chronic issue I am going to look into getting mine taken off while the truck is young :S

    Try this:

I've used one of these very successfully to take off pinstriping... I'd imagine it'd work well for these stone guards too! As a matter of fact, if I get time this weekend I'll try it on mine and post results!

I just peeled mine off slowly on a warm day, sprayed some bug & tar remover on it and let it sit for about 10 minutes. A microfiber towel and a little elbow grease and it's like the were never there! I also did the ones behind the door handles.

I watched Larry from AMMO NYC and he used steam to remove paint protection film. I am going to try this when I remove mine this summer at some point

Well I finally stumbled on an answer for the removal of the old hardened stone guards, Turtle Wax Sticker and Label remover---worked really well. No heat needed. Use that stuff and a plastic razor blade. Nice results for $6.99!

I have a white '11. My stone guards look just like this picture and even an little worse.... black mold/dirt around the edges....
Also, I hit one of them too close with a 3500psi pressure washer one day and it tore the hell out of it.

I would love to try taking them off, but don't want to get halfway into the job and realize I should have left them alone.

Can you buff off the adhesive safely?
I need to get this shit off my truck. I'm not going to use anything but heat (you know because I actually care about my paint job). Wondering if I have to hit it at the end with a buffing pad if it should be ok or will I just risk marring the truck?

As mentioned I tried all kinds of things. I was ready to buy one of those expensive eraser wheels, boy that would have taken some time. The Turtle Wax Sticker and Label remover IS THE STUFF! Got it at the Auto Zone store. Spray it on, let it soak, spray it again. Could not find locally, but online there is a plastic razor blade scraper that would work well. I got a couple of black plastic wide putty blades from Home Depot, nice edge and won't scratch. The guards will peal off, may have to reapply a couple of times, but even the goo will come off. For under $10 nothing better or easier, especially for old baked on guards like mine were. Cleaned the area with MEK, then applied a coat of wax and polish. Looking good now!

It worked great! Still need some elbow grease and some plastic scrapers. Each side took about 45 minutes.

    It's complicated.
I imagine that those are some type of protective skin, yes/no? Does anyone make color specific replacement panels?

Sweet. I'll probably pick some up tomorrow.

Yes, it's a clear film/vinyl to prevent the area from getting rock chips, scratches, etc. And many brands make it, but they're not pre-cut. Your best bet would be to go to Toyota if you want direct replacements without having to cut according to the size.

Yes , thick vinyl skin applied when new. There probably are some color replacements.
