IMG_0169.jpg IMG_0031.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg hey guys, want to see if there is any intrest for a dissent offroad over canopy bed rack for a softopper.
I'm building an all aluminum modular bed rack and got the first prototype today. I will be adding several slotted holes, logo, rotopax mount, maxtrax mount ect ect. The extra height is needed for longer objects to clear the shark fin, I plan to add camp table brackets on the underside to utalize this space. image.jpg image.jpg I want to see what would be most popular,
Over canopy(also needed for hard shell tent), cab height or below cab?
    Feedback is appreciated!
    Thanks

    UPDATE!
Thanks @Tacomamike mike for chiming in!
He is correct, the 2 racks do not connect.
I do plan on a 2nd gen as well and from my research it should be an easy transition. If there is anyone with a second gen that wants to come by my shop for measurements it would speed up the process. I'm in grass valley ca so pm me if interested.

I have a few other racks in the works as well.
I will be doing a headache/chaser rack for those that want a cab rack but don't need the full bed rack and will also be doing a mid high bed rack for rtt.
I have many options and accessories in the works as well!
I'm still working on the prices for the cab rack as manufacturing cost has come in much higher than originally thought.
As it stands right now the cab rack will be $649, that will include all hardware, 4 load bars and your choice between a light bar fairing or no light bar. Additional load bars will be $55 each.
I will be offering a black textured powder coat on everything but the load bars and that will be $75
Custom colors available for local pick up.

The bed rack is $1000 for the short bed and $1075 for the long bed. This includes all hardware and 3 load bars. Additional load bars are $55 each.
The flip up side doors/accessories mounts are going to cost a bit more than originally thought as well due to hardware cost.
I was not happy with the cheep China hinges so I am have custom hinges made in the USA to my specs. These will look much nicer and much higher quality than the hinges I was originally using!
The price for the doors will be $350 each for short bed and $400 for long bed. These will include locking latches, custom quick release billet hinges, gas struts and various mounting holes for accessories.
All racks will come ready for the doors so they can be added at anytime.
The weigh on the bed rack with all bolts is 44lbs for the short bed and 50lbs for the long bed.
    Cab rack is around 35lbs.
Both racks are cnc cut and formed from 1/8" 5052 aluminum.
Feel free to pm me if you have any questions or would like to order. I have 10 cab racks almost completed, the bed racks are about 3-5 weeks out.
    Thanks!
    Ben.

I definitely think their is s market for them. I personally have a OTT pack rack from all pro on the way. It would have been nice to have a modular option as well. Looks good!

sub'd. I just ordered my truck last night and now I'm trying to find options to secure/lock cargo in the bed. Ordered a DCLB OR4x4 and traditionally I've always gotten a Leer campershell. I ordered the OEM bedcover for now until I can find a solution. Plan to do lot's of off roading and will be getting a RTT. This will also be my daily driver and because the backseats will be fitted with two carseats, no cab room will be available. Interested to see how this build develops. Definately a market for this.

I'm interested in the over-canopy solution. I have a hard-shell RTT, and it would be nice to be able to use it with the Tacoma.

image.jpg image.jpg Just to be clear this is designed to fit with a softopper and would not fit over a fiberglass shell.

Thanks for all the feedback guys!
For me the softopper is a necessity and unfortunately most bed racks will not accommodate.
The reason I chose to build the rack around the softopper is it's a good price, good quality and its frame design allows the rack to not stick out any further than the cab. I really think the extra width will be nice even without a canopy as it would possibly allow bed caps to fit as well (not confirmed)
And would allow accessories to be mounted on the inside without sacrificing cargo space.
I really don't like the look of the back with the vertical edge so trying to come up with somthing to break that up, maybe a nice custom grab handle.
Here's a couple pics of the back and sides rolled up, it's a little tougher to roll up and get to some of the snaps on the top but not bad at all. image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

I plan to do a locking maxtracks and rotopax mount plates for both sides, these could be used to secure the sides. I just need to figure out a simple way to secure the back.

I would for sure be interested in one of these depending on your prices compared to a voodoo! and also what type of bumper is that?

This idea is perfect man. I have an all-pro rack but have a good amount of overhang with my rtt because it doesn't clear the shark fin.

Would it look better with a slight rake on the aft pillars, like moving the lower points towards the rear edge? A grab handle would be a nice add, if it didn't get in the way. Perhaps a paracord handle would be a good fit.

Just came across this, but I just finished one similar to what you have going on! I custom made mine to wrap around the topper. I think what you have going on is a great idea! Keep it up!

The target price is going to be around $1000. This is higher than most bed racks but it's also completly different from any I have seen. Being that it's an over canopy design it has full length base plates which will allow a seal to be installed, the base plate also has integrated tie down points.
The biggest difference in its a 10ga aluminum! I have not got the final weight but it's light!
I'm not sure how other modular racks are but a really nice feature on mine is all the nuts are pressed into the aluminum, meaning you don't have to hold nuts with a wrench on the back side.
Also very convenient for checking the bolts for tightness later on.
I have had many steel racks in the past and if you use it it will get scratched, it will end up being a constant battle keeping the rust away. IMO there is a place for using steel and a roof rack is not one of them.
With that being said, I could possibly offer a steel version but the only benefit would be the price.
This is the first one so once it's finalized I will negotiate with the laser cutters to get the best price possible. I should have a final price in a week or 2.

It would for sure but for production and with the modular design it would complicate things.
I do think some kind of bolt on grab handle will work out great for stepping onto the rear bumper.
