Well, after reading most of the threads, looks like I won't be alone in NOT taking my truck in for "toyota care". I've always been my favorite mechanic anyhow. Thanks guys.

My dealer had my 2005 Camry SE in for a recall on a pulley or some shit. During it's visit (10 minutes after I dropped it off) they called and said it needed $1,000 in repairs. Fuel injection service, water pump was "leaking all over", belts were tattered and about to break. I suspected bull shit since I had just topped up the wash fluid and had seen the belts myself. Also the car had never dropped a single drop of fluid anywhere.

I had them do the recall repair only. Took the car to another shop. They did an inspection free of charge. Told me there was absolutely NOTHING wrong with the car. Belts were in perfect shape, water pump was in fact NOT leaking at all, etc.

This same dealer did an oil change for me on that car. I drove off and went on my way. Next day I noticed oil spots trailing into my parking space. Thought it was odd. Left that place to go to another errand. Noticed the same spots. Looked under engine bay and saw oil streaming out. Immediately hit the dealer. They determined that the oil filter gasket had been busted or some shit, they'd used the wrong oil filter or something. The motor was literally pushing oil out of itself. They did a new oil change free of charge right then and there. Oil light came on before I got there and smoke was coming out the rear end (turned out to be oil burning on the exhaust pipes). But hey... had I not been paying attention I could have run that fucking motor to dust before I noticed the light even come on!

I've always done my own maintenance but this is the first car I've had where the dealer will do the first few free. Haven't got to 5k yet but I'll probably bring it in and go from there.

I did an oil change myself at 1k with mobil1 and a Toyota filter. Not a big deal.

I just took mine in for the 10k and don't think I'll be taking it back. They had the truck all day and it turned into a shitshow having to call 3 times before anyone could tell me if my truck was ready. I don't have the time to wait all day and I can't have my truck down all day. Not worth it for an oil change.

At my 5000 mile service I had them change my oil also, they did but made a mess of it.I am over 20,000 now, have been to 3 other dealers trying to find 1 that does not suck.AT 10,15 and 20,000 all of them changed the oil so I have had 4 free oil changes, they all said they used synthetic but I doubt it.Apparently none of them know oil change interval is supposed to be 10,000,they all put the 5,000 mile next change sticker on the windshield.

I've had mixed experiences with dealership service. Nissan screwed up the wheel studs on my '09 Maxima (second oil change/ tire rotation) so badly that the car vibrated for the rest of the time I owned it.

I had an 86 and never had issues when Toyota did the oil changes, but damn the patience required to just get a damn oil change...then when I asked about the 60,000 mile service, I knew more than the damn "tech" about what was recommended at 60k.

I'll probably get the two free oil changes, then move on to a local garage for regular maintenance.

So i noticed on my lease that they charge over $2,000 (built in to the sticker cost of the vehicle). Has anyone ever asked for that discount if not taking the "free Toyota care"?

If you lease, use it. If you bought, don't. This way you can do the maintenance when you want without running to dealer. Just keep dated records of the servicing with receipts.
