i know that keeping regular maintenance is required under warranty but does anyone know if I have to have it done at the dealer? It's such a pita to get in there for even an oil change. I'd rather just go to a drive thru oil change place. Thanks

No. But you must keep proof. Assuming you ever have an oil related warranty issue. Which is quite unlikely.

But please, no drive through joints either. Unless you already know the owner/tech or something.

Even if you can't DIY, find a quality independent shop and let them do it. You'll be able to use them for other services as well.

It's illegal for a dealer/manufacturer to decline warranty coverage due to not having had a dealer service the vehicle. They may tell you otherwise but it's not true.

Proof you had maintenance done at an independent shop is ok.

Proof (old receipts) that you bought oil/filters from an auto parts store doesn't uphold the warranty with an oil/engine failure issue.

If you're talking to me, not sure what your snickering is about. It's not hard to do.

Com'on man, how can hey expect you to keep record straight of maintenance you did yourself. Even if you show receipts, it doesn't mean you actually did the work or that you did the work correctly.

Doing oil changes on your own doesn't void a warranty.

I emailed toyota canada when i first got my 2015.

With respect to servicing your Toyota vehicle, we would like to take this opportunity to advise that routine maintenance services (engine oil changes, transmission fluid changes, brake services etc. etc.) do not have to be performed at a Toyota dealership. You are free to have maintenance done wherever you wish or if desired, may be performed by yourself-- but please be sure to keep all work-orders, receipts for any routine maintenance or fluid purchases. You may also wish to keep a log book detailing any maintenance repairs that have been completed on your vehicle, including date, time and odometer readings.

    If a warranty repair becomes necessary, you may be asked to show proof that the maintenance has been done in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. These routine maintenance recommendations are provided in the Owner's Manual Supplement as well the Maintenance Menu found on our website;

    http://www.toyota.ca/cgi-bin/WebObj...Menu-yK81qJ3f5uRMWailotkSl0/0.7?o110000e.html

If your vehicle needs warranty work or recall work, however, you will need to bring it to an authorized Toyota dealership for diagnosis and repair. This is standard in the automotive industry.

We do recommend Toyota parts and service when available, and it is really in the owner's best interest. It ensures that a technician that has been properly trained in Toyota vehicles is diagnosing and repairing your vehicle.

For further information on our warranties, roadside and basic maintenance requirements, we kindly suggest to refer to the owner s manual supplement guide that came with your vehicle.

We trust the provided information proves to be helpful, and thank you for taking the time to write.

    Sincerely,

    Christopher Krascek

I keep my receipts for oil and buy the filters at toyota here.

"com'on man" - I confirmed the details, as submitted by Rusty 1606, with my selling dealer, and they validated the listed requirements, as all that is required to maintain not only the factory warranty, and but also the "Lifetime" complimentary power train warranty I received when I purchased my 2015 Sport. I keep a maintenance log - date and mileage corresponding to the factory recommended maintenance schedule - and keep all the dated / detailed receipts. The presumption that the work was done and done correctly, when accompanied by the proper documentation is in YOUR favor, unless it can be PROVED otherwise. Since your ride is not likely covered by any warranty, it probably doesn't matter if you keep records or not. And unless you have an example of a warranty denial that was supported by proper documentation, you don't have a real credible opinion (but you are entitled to it)
