As much as I hate to add another "post photos of your X" thread... I can't find any actual photos of what I'm looking for!

Same idea as this (one of the TW members, if I'm not mistaken):

    _MG_9288_6f52e5b1ec17abf214bf0078115d0ba62dc62ba8.jpg

... but with a hard-shell roof top tent. Curious to see the rack used, spacing in front of the tent, overhang in the rear, etc.

Post 'em if you have 'em!

Found a few shots of what I'm after on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tavllc/

Short-bed truck, but the same idea. My tent will be white, and shouldn't overhang.

Now the big decision: do I stick w/ the idea of having a custom bed-rack fabricated (to work with the incoming tonneau), or keep my FrontRunner rack (and possibly get an extension to make it longer) and just get new feet/mounting system fabricated for it?

The FrontRunner rack would give me more options for mounting goods on it, but might get in the way of reaching into the bed from the sides of the truck, and would be the slightly more expensive option... hmmm....

Nice thanks for posting. Why the hard shell?

Speed of setup/teardown is critical for me. Soft-shells take way too long.

5 minutes is way too long? I bet you I could get it set up in 2 minutes if I had to.

If it's more than 60 seconds, it's too long.

Having setup a tent in howling winds, torrential downpour and pitch black darkness, I'm never going to fumble with setting up windows, poles, or stakes again. Soft tents have their place, but they're categorically out for my needs.

I get it, they are both pretty easy to set up but the hardshell is easier and much less involved. Thats why they make hardshells so people have optiosn.

The hard-shell is definitely easier; I won't argue that. I'd have one if it didn't cost 2.5X more than mine did. I don't think the convenience of a hard-shell outweighs the cost, but if I could find one used and could make it out almost even I'd be all over it. Fwiw I don't know what you'd be dealing with stakes for and realistically if speed is of great importance in a certain situation you don't really need to put up the window poles up (or can set up a pair from the inside at least) Either way good luck! Should be easy with your LB!

Are the KB Voodoo bed racks what you are looking for? I think they are made to work with tonneau covers.

In this thread I was just looking for photos of existing solutions to get some ideas.

I know about the racks you're talking about. Not what I plan on using.

Are you having it sit below cab height for better mileage? That is one drawback to having the RTT on top of a shell. I imagine the JB is somewhat more aerodynamic than a soft shell RTT, but still saw mine drop 3-4 mpg.

Also agree with you for set-up and take-down times. Less than 30 seconds up and maybe 2 minutes down. Plus you can keep sleeping bags in there.

Holy crap. My soft shell sits a couple inches above roof line and I had less than 1mpg drop all summer.

Could be the shell + RTT combo? Was averaging 21-22 with just a tonneau and now more in the 17-18 range. More noticeable at highway speeds.

Could be I suppose. Seems like a big hit, but I guess there's a lot that can effect it. Maybe if you have a lot of cross winds up at highway speeds.
