It's better for someone to buy one brand new than to pay for yours. They will get a better interest rate, potentially 0%, which will be cheaper than paying used car rate for yours

IMO, you are asking too much. Used vehicles don't usually get as good an interest rate and I don't think a new one is that much more. Even if you are selling $900 below the locals, those are still for sale right? Plus, if they are at a dealership, they can offer financing. I also don't think the Limited is as popular as the TRDs. Let's say that I'm buying a Taco..... buy your used fancy truck for $36K or buy a new OR which is what I want (since I'm going to be rock crawling and everyone needs a locker) for the same price?

I just kind of think all those things are working against you.

I'm in a different area than you, but: I would have bought a used truck myself, but the price they are asking for a used 4X4, much less a used 4X4 Tacoma drove me to buy new.

How bad you wanna move it.. drive it longer let it depreciate more then sell, or drop value now and sell.

If no bites at 36k try 35k.

Ultimately, this is about the selling price, not the asking price. You are only seeing listings for trucks that have not sold yet. You aren't seeing listings for trucks that have already sold. Buyers almost always negotiate down, so sellers try to start with a higher asking price to set the negotiation pivot point high.

You can use the same strategy and start with a high asking price, but it's less realistic to actually expect to have someone pay exactly your asking price. Keep in mind that auto loan rates tend to be slightly higher for used vehicles than for new vehicles and that additional interest on the used car loan will negate a portion of the cost savings of buying used.

When dealing with negotiations and setting prices it's always important to remember that the people buying your truck are mostly rational people too. Put yourself in their shoes: Would you choose to pay $36K for a used Limited from a private party, or would you just spend a few extra thousand to get a new truck? Your target audience for people willing to spend $36K but not $40-41K (or whatever it is now) is potentially small.

But you might as well try it for a few weeks. Adjust the price downward if you don't get any realistic offers.

I was going to sell my 13 OR private party, BUT most people just want to waste time , tire kickers, daydreamers, people that can't get finacing, list goes on and on. Other issues are I would think it's harder to get a loan for a private party sale. Allso your buying as is, with whats left of the factory warranty, after that if there are any issues it falls on the buyer. Plus like most here already said, new car gets full warranty, any issues I can go to dealer to resolve, lower finance rate , peace of mind. Totally worth couple extra grand to get that over used.

Yes, I asked about the market and made the mistake of posting my price and details. That's my bad. I shouldn't have added more context.

No, I was just expecting opinions on the market in general. I made the mistake of adding details about my specific situation. I'm at fault on this one.

OP- did you get it at auction?

Also, the average sale price of used cars in general that sell is around $16,000. Anything significantly above that narrows the pool of prospective buyers.

Try dropping the price by $500 increments just to get some bites...

The used market for tacomas is fantastic. They are the best selling used vehicle in existence

No, I didn't get it at an auction. Bought it from a dealer.

I started the listing at $37,000 expecting someone to negotiate to $35,500. I might just drop it to $35,000 and be firm on the price.

I wouldn't pay more for a Limited than an OR.

And people will negotiate those prices down. Because your used isn't worth what you're asking.

Okay, just as far as market is concerned:

I thought used prices to be ridiculously high, so I bought new.

Or try $35,999...for some reason the "9" part works...but that's a retail trick and may not work on a secondary market customer.

People like to feel they are getting value...especially nowadays. Also if you are in no hurry to sell, that helps you. But if you need to unload that gives the customer leverage.

Back in the day my dad would occasionally buy a car to flip. He seemed to be happy with making $500 a pop, which would be about $1000 in todays money.

I'll do a search on that truck on lot's around me just to see what's up.

That's your opinion though. And a lot of buyers who want a Limited won't consider an OR.

How do you define "worth"? Fair market value? Competitive analysis and regional pricing? MSRP minus depreciation?

All of these factors put it at a reasonable price. Considering that Seattle has a 10.1% sales tax, a $42,000 new Tacoma vs. a $36,000 used is a pretty big difference in cost.

Worth is whatever someone is willing to pay for it. Obviously if no one is biting, it is not worth what you are asking. People aren't stupid. They will not pay new prices for a used vehicle

Sure but who would pay 42K for a Tacoma other than a Pro?
