I built a room in my 03 Tacoma so I can live on the road for a bit

I sold my Jeep TJ back in November and bought this 03 Tacoma with 100,000 miles and in excellent shape for $10,000 in January. Picked up a used snugtop hi-liner shell on craigslist for $350 so I can set up my room. I'm going to be doing a lot of traveling this summer since I work as a raft guide, so I decided to build a room in the bed. Hopefully this can give those of you thinking about doing something similar some ideas to work from.

I made timelapse video of the entire build for those interested in watching. Everything in the video is pretty self explanatory but if you have any questions, post them here and I'll get back you!

Thanks guys appreciate the comments. I basically searched these forums and others online to find as many examples of what I wanted to do and took elements from each to come up with this. Hopefully others can take some ideas from my build and apply them to theirs.

The snugtop overlaps the tailgate significantly so as long as the snugtop is locked, you can't open the tailgate.

awesome job. It amazes me how people take an idea and just run with it. I'd still be measuring for the first board. Sub'ed for future updates on this!

Awesome build man. Simplistic, comfortable, (I assume) relatively cheap. I have watched countless numbers of these videos planning for my build but can't seem to find a cap, so I can't start :(. Love how you didn't occupy the entire space with the mattress. I have seen tons of videos where people set up their mattress the full size of the truck bed and it seems to leave them with very difficult to use storage space with no moving room. Granted, I understand some people want a big bed and have different intentions, but it just seems that if you shrink your mattress space a little bit, you can get a whole lot more functionality out of the very limited space. Anyhow, like I said, awesome build, great video. Keep us posted on how it works out!

Will keep you guys posted for sure!
As for the design... I specifically made it this way for more space, as you mentioned. I needed room to store my snowboard and other gear when I'm on the road and this was the most logical layout for that extra space. It is comfortable and gives me room to change or work inside if it's raining out. Doesn't sleep 2, but I'm traveling alone or with other buddies that have similar setups so I don't need the space to sleep 2..right now at least. I had a tough time finding a cap too, why I drove 10 hours to pick up this one (1st gen, single cab, hi-top shells seem to be pretty tough to find).

Well, I think you just inspired me to head 6 hours each way to Michigan to pick up a cap.

So many roll in wanting to know about level lifts, how big a tire can I fit and what wheels/wheel spacers, I'm thrilled you were willing to buy a used truck and adapt it to your needs in practical ways.

Thanks for letting us peek over your shoulder.

Love it. Well done, sir. A round of applause for the single cab 4x4. Sometimes that's all you need.
