Hello everyone... I am having a problem with my 2004 taco bogging out. It usually happens when on the freeway, when I take my foot offf the gas it kinda Boggs out almost like it's gunna die and then when when you step on the gas it takes a second before it accelerates again. ???

I had a really similar issue with my '01. It was the throttle position sensor. It was an intermittent issue that happened mostly while in stop/go traffic. A few times my truck actually stalled out...

Here's the thread I posted about the issue with my truck... I spent about a year chasing my tail thinking it was a transmission issue until it finally threw a TPS code. A couple other guys in this thread had TPS issues as well. Hopefully you have the type of throttle body with the replaceable TPS. If you have an electronic TB I've heard you can't just replace the sensor, gotta get the whole TB unit.

    I drive a 2004 Tacoma pre-runner
    3.4L V-6 3378cc type 5VZFE
143,000miles I have only added a KN air filter, magna flow exhaust billet grill. It sure which throttle sensor it has?

.... any chance this would cause the truck to run lean? When I'm wheeling in low gear, my truck starts to run lean then dumps a ton of fuel into the tune. It used to be an issue on the highway, but now its strictly when I'm wheeling. Seeing your stop and go issue in conjunction with the horrid clunking feeling I get when coming off the throttle (similar to this thread) kinda makes me think this could be why I have this seemingly unsolvable issue.

When you say it's leans out then dumps fuel, how do you know? Is it throwing codes or are you monitoring it on an ultra gauge or something? Pretty much all modern fuel injected vehicles switch back and forth between lean and rich as the computer sees demand. If you're not getting check engine light you likely don't have an issue there. The clunk you're describing sounds like a motor or trans mount to me. Maybe a bad leaf spring bushing.

I have an OBD2 reader that shows my short term fuel trim. Under normal driving and no P0171, I fluctuate between -4% and +4%. When I throw P0171 (too lean bank 1), it immediately tosses in +20% fuel trim. There is no mistaking the smell of a vehicle running rich, either haha. The clunk only happens under this lean condition.

Interesting... Yea you've got other issues the TPS won't cause a lean condition. Maybe a MAF or vacuum leak. Though a vacuum leak would cause a more constant lean condition.
