1st gen tacos and 3rd gen tacos are quite different. 1st gens are small, simple, fun, and reliable. 3rd gens are bigger, more comfortable, more complicated, better as a daily driver. 2nd gens are the middle ground. Cant really hate on either one for having a different purpose.

but man. those 3rd gens are ugly, lack acceleration, and dont get that good of mileage even compared to 20 year old 1st gens.

Everyone has a preference. Children usually have a hard time justifying why someone else likes something else. Eventually if you grow up and get over yourself and realize there will always be someone better and someone less than you , you stop arguing about useless things. Like who's taco or Jeep is better. Myself I like 1st and 2nd gen Tacomas. Just do what you like and let the Small things go. Like idiots who believe their way is best. Now your enlightened. Haha.

I have almost 100% decided on a 1st gen, but I keep going back and forth. From what I remember, I thought the a/c vents were really poorly placed in the 2nd gen, which is unacceptable in AZ. I also really didn't enjoy driving the 2nd gen that much. But on paper, a newer truck makes more sense for me and my growing family. Damn I don't know. Maybe I'll drive one or two more 2nd gens and see. I've also been finding carcomplaints.com super helpful, and the 2nd gens have a bunch of complaints about sticking accelerators and such. This might not be the best place to start this debate, but whatever. OP does what OP wants!!!

Tacomas are nice trucks. I would be happy with any generation, however, I decided on a gen 1 due to the few problems and reliability it has compared to the gen 2/3 as others have said. They also look nice. I would never let go of my first gen for a 2nd or 3rd, but I have no problems with them. Same with 4runners and tundras.

Older models were built to last longer and were not subject to so much planned obsolescence(purposely made with cheaper, less durable, more likely to break or fail materials) as the newer gens are. Again though, I would happily take a 2nd gen from before 2007 if my 1st gen went suicidal. knock on wood. she's only 73K miles old.

I bought it about a month and a half ago. I haven't even put 1K miles on the road yet. Got it off craigslist, poor guy bought the taco had it for 4 months and then had to sell(he opted to sell the taco over his corvette, horrible choice in my opinion) cause he was having a baby. Got a great deal and will hopefully have it for the next 25 years. Craigslist every once in awhile has a diamond in the rough. Just got to sort through em. Good luck with your decision and search

Yes they are ugly. Front of the 3rd gen is the worst.
Wish they had the body of the Colorado .

Let's not forget that some of the 05 and 06 models had head gasket issues on the 1gr-fe (4.0 V6).

I don't mind people having 2nd or 3rd gens, but I would not be interested to own them. Simply because they are not small anymore

They are not that much smaller than the fullsize trucks, by the way. I live not so far from a Toyota dealership where they park the trucks next to each other and the tacoma is only slightly smaller whereas if I park mine next to the tundra, it is much more smaller and it is also noticeably smaller than the tacoma

but anyway, I am not complaining, but I think it is a shame the compact truck is dead because their small size is what makes them fun :/

I'll keep driving mine untill it turns to dust, but it's going to be hard with a galvanized steel frame and a body still in good shape :p

Also maybe I am a bit biased because I am a small-sized person myself, I don't know :notsure:

I think it is less about the vehicle but more of the $hitty attitude of the owner.

This also applies to the Toyoto/Jeep debate and the Audi/BMW debate.

My experiences are that Jeep owners, specifically that JK model, are complete dillholes (yep, that is me being sweeping, broad and generalizing). Don't agree? Browse the forum for proof http://wayalife.com/

I have no hate for 2nd/3rd gen, but I am biased on the 1st gen.
If I wanted a 2nd/3rd gen or 4runner, I would have bought one.

I've had and/or driven all the gen's, and they are all good at different things. I would have bought a 1st gen but they were ridiculously priced (especially for the mileage) so i bought a 2nd gen instead (and now 2nd gen's were ridiculously priced used so i bought a 3rd gen).

3rd gen is by far the best truck of them all, but the 1st gen has a much more engaging experience (no throttle by wire, manuals options, etc, light and compact) that the 2nd/3rd gen cant match.

However, as a DD the 3rd gen wins hands down, no comparison. Way more power, better MPG, way better interior, way better ride, way better storage, way better / useful bed, etc. etc. etc.

Would i drive a 1st gen? Heck yea. 2nd? Heck year. 3rd? Heck yeah.

Lots of haters on this forum tho. Yup, just like jeeps guys. Lots of people hate what they don't have.
