ARB awning on factory rack?

anybody managed to mount one? with the rack being closed, eg without crossing the bars side to side?

 

The awnings don't use the cross bars for mounting, anyway.

I'd figure it's possible, but you'd have to drill into the factory rack?

 

I am trying not to do this

 

What's wrong with that? Seems like a good solution. Throw in some hex screws and its relatively secure too

You'd need to figure someway to adapt the mount to work with the roof rack, so not sure how else you'd do that. This is the back of the awning where the awning mount is. It's a track.

Not sure on the factory cross bars, but then they'd have to be deployed also to use the awning which (I think?) he's trying to avoid.. if so, you'd have to drill into the rack and make your own mount, which wouldn't be too hard.

I'm not sure if the roof rack itself has much strength to it for the drilling option, I've never had the OEM rack.

 

I got it now, didn't read his initial post close enough. No, those adapters wouldn't do a thing. Hmmmm....

 

OEM rack on my T4R is basically a bunch of plastic with a lot of air in between, so not much to drill through/not much strength to attach to.

 

That's exactly my thought process oem rack might not handle drilling, a guy on TW is selling an awning, and I want it, but now I'll have to venture into some sort of cross bars on top of the rack and brackets for that.....

 

Well if you switch out to Yakima or Thule cross bars, the mount above is pretty nice looking and isn't terribly expensive for what it is.

I've bought from etrailer before, they're great to buy from - they also have pretty good prices and can likely walk you through over the phone and get what you need to use your OEM rack.

 

You might be able to use the Yakima Mighty Mounts since that would orient the bar to the side which is what you're looking to do, $35 for a set of four.

 

but the 4R OEM rack is 100x sturdier if you were attach something to it, I had a basket and TRED boards on mine and it was SOLID

 

Word, but T4R rails are metal, at least.. isn't the Tacoma roof rack mostly plastic, though? Not the cross bars, but the actual rails.

You'd have to check out the Yakima website for dimensions, but they're designed to adapt to factory crossbars. I've used them on Subaru and they work fine.
