    Any details on what was used here? An opaque piece of plastic/poly sheet maybe?

    Na, all you need (what I used) was stickey backed colored led strips you can buy on ebay for <$5bucks. Slap one on the back of the skid above and/or below the cuttout and wire to a switch (or your headlights) and you're set.
