A 9 yo vehicle is very susceptible to clear coat failure, particularly if its lived a very sunny unwaxed life.

What conditions has your's been in?

And any part of a vehicle that is plastic/urethane/fiberglass in nature will fail faster than metal.

I have an '04 Highlander that is looking like a class one leper on the flat surfaces.

Thanks for the info. Truck has been in California weather mostly here in LA. It's just the clear coat on the plastic May have to have it repainted. It just seems a little out of the ordinary. Never seen another tacoma peel in that area. The rest of the truck looks good.

Mine is doing the same exact thing. Guilty of not waxing like I should in the Georgia heat.

It doesn't from what I was told when they had to compound my taco a few years back because of blotches. When I repainted the tailgate it was not clear coated when I sanded it down. Maybe older ones did? OP, could that actually be the paint and the plastic scoop is white plastic or light colored primer?

No because my truck is washed regularly and a sealer is applied every 6 months.

PS Super white has clear coat mixed in, so no top coat. Likely paint failure from lack of love and care. Luckiky that peice is plastic so you can get a new insert and repaint.

They don't. At least through '13 like mine. Another reason that's the color I was after.

I suspect that the plastic bits 'may' have clearcoat though, in an effort to prevent fading. The plastic bits always fade faster than metal, and I suspect it's because of flex agents and such used in the paint.

That would also explain why only that one area was affected. But the good news is only that one area needs to be addressed, and it can be done in a number of ways, fairly inexpensively.

If I wanted to attempt a home remedy and color match, I'd start here http://www.apstowerpaint.com/
