Btw, the 50+ Watts are the mobiles bro. I don't want you to think the Baofeng handhelds are outputting those wattages!!! The

Baofeng UV-5R's are right around 5W max output wattage on the HIGH setting. The LOW setting, I think is around 1W or just under that??? But, yeah, pretty low.

A decent mobile that I recently was introduced to by @eccracer104 Mike is the BTECH Mini

UV-25X2 mobile and/or similar. But, most mobiles start getting pretty up there in price range. This one is around $115, but, in many ways, worth getting over the handhelds. There are pros/cons having handheld only or mobile only. I have both, just because, LOL!!!

Also, btw, they have handhelds that are 8W capable as well! Only 3W more, but it will give you that much more "reach" over a 5W!!!

Anyways, again, the handhelds are only 5-8W whereas the mobiles are +10W!!!

You "leave" it in. It's good to have a mobile for the "reach" and the handhelds so that you can "walk around" if you have to for spotting someone or whatever the case may be.

 

I guess you could take it in and out as you please, but you have an antenna and power wires that you would have to disconnect each time. It's small enough to fit between your seat and center console or you can just mount it in your center console and it will be out of sight.

 

Did you do the MOD to yours so you can transmit on the "locked" freq's?

 

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend constantly plugging/unplugging a mobile very often!!! You're going to wear the hell out of that thing before you know it. And, as stated, even the cheap mobiles aren't necessarily THAT cheap. But, that's just me.

Baofeng BF-F8HP that gives out 8w ($50), its a great little handheld, I'm also using a Uniden 505XL CB mobile unit ($30) with a 4' firestick that gets folded down and tucked away when not in use. (Good cheap combo for both CB and Ham)

 

I'm always one for multiple forms of comms!!!

Btw, you can also communicate to those GMRS/FRS radios as well utilizing the 70cm band (400MHz), just to let you know if you don't already know it!!!
