x2 I hate my wife's Jetta. Not just the car, but working on it. And it is such a POS it needs work often. Luckily we found a very good, straightforward, and reasonably priced VW mechanic. I'll take my best shot at assessment, and then send her on her way with the info. Except for the time I had to replace the glove box door (because that is something everybody should expect to do if you have a VW, apparently), and that required 47 (seriously, 47) steps of interior dismantling beginning with the rear seat ashtray console I SHIT YOU NOT. Fuck.

^^ I can vouch for that. My wife owned one right up to when we got married and I traded it in for her... for an upgrade of course. Acura FTW.

Haha, holy shit, I've heard VW's can be bad, but that's just ridiculous. Makes me glad how simple the Tacoma glove box is.

At least it is cramped and uncomfortable inside (and I'm not even big), the interior finishes are total shit and all the plastic is embrittled and breaks, the electrics are fucked up (windows, sunroof, stereo, door buzzers, you name it, random fuckery), the fucking sunroof drains are easily prone to plugging, causing the entire interior to get soaked, and it goes through oil like an anal gangbang.

I told her we just need to get her a new car and stop wasting time and money on it, need something safer and more reliable, especially with the kid on board now. I said we can get anything you want, but no VWs. We test drove a couple Subies before life got too crazy and now in the middle of buying selling houses, and taking care of dad in the Bay Area, which is turning into a big stinking mess or complicated issues. After we get moved into the new place and the old place is sold, this goes to the top of the list again.

It had 9 screws holding it in 8 are easily accessible. 1 is hidden behind a piece of dash/console that requires the epic dismantling. WITAF, smart German engineer guys? I tried prying a panel away to fake it, but it was not going to happen without major additional damage. And this was all because it was tax time and she had a tax doc in the glove box. Are you fucking shitting me, Snookums? Is that where we keep our tax docs?

haha I literally messaged him yesterday to see when it would come up again. It's automated so he didn't know.

    Good looking out!
