so I've done a little research but most problems similiar to mine come up with a Manual trans and my 03 prerunner is auto. Anyway, I've noticed lately while I drive, it sounds like gears are grinding. The noise kind of reminds me of when you're driving a stick and you slip or shift in the wrong gear. I've also noticed that the shifter is wobbling a lot and has even slipped into neutral a few times. I was wondering if anyone has some experience with this, and what's most likely the cause and how to go about fixing it. Thanks! Any advice appreciated!

Check the linkage from the shifter to the transmission. Also, pull the trim from around the shifter and make sure everything is A-OK.

    Any help here?

Are the shift rods internal or external linkage on these?

Guessing there would be bushings at the base of the shifter involved too?

@spacecat, how many miles on the transmission, when was it last serviced (and how, full flush or drain/fill), what fluid, and is it full of fluid? Nice and pink/red, no burnt smell, correct?

Stuff always good to know but may be helpful for an internet diagnosis.

@Clearwater Bill Closing in on 160k. I've had it about a year and to be honest have not yet done any major tranny service. No burnt smell, no leaks as for as I can tell.

I think a free road test is due . Any local reputable transmission shop can road test for free and usually pick out the problem on a free test drive . I would be looking at the motor and transmission mounts as well as the universal joints to begin .
