Flipping the factory trailer hitch?

Was thinking of modifying the OEM rear bumper- adding LED light cut outs, maybe foot steps in the corners of the bumper.

When I was looking at the bumper I started looking at the trailer hitch- thought it looked too low... started to think of cutting through the square tube on each side- rotate it and flip it- put a sleeve inside and weld it back together so that the receiver now lands behind the license plate (move your wiring plug behind the plate as well)- cut a large hole out behind the license plate (use a flip up license plate bracket) when you flip the license plate you should have access to your receiver and your wiring plug. Would give a cleaner look and more clearance/ departure angle.

Think it would work? Anyone already done it?

 

So I seen this pic and it brought me back to the idea of flipping the trailer hitch.

I am now thinking the easiest way would be to cut the factory receiver tube and safety chain points off and weld a new receiver tub and safety chin points on the top of the existing square tube that runs side to side.

Reuse the trailer wiring plug mount, weld it beside the new receiver so that it sits behind the plate as well.

Once the weather is nicer I will do some measuring and see if any of this is even close to being able to work.

 

I want to do something similar, only I plan to shift the license plate to the left as well, so the plate doesn't interfere with the receiver. Not sure when I will get to tackle this one, but I am following your thread now...

 

The receiver protects that flimsy bumper so I'd recommend just replacing it all
