    Have you tried these? http://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-Rese...=1428155322&sr=8-1&keywords=etymotic+earplugs

The 'stepped' fitment you see is what locks it in your ear. I have never had them come out. And one ear does not insert as far as the other, (apparently my canal sizes are a bit different) but either one still fits either ear because of the stepping.

They are awesome. Wife and I use at high speeds on interstates in small convertible sports cars, top down. You can hear the radio and have conversation, yet there is no wind noise and even minimal road/exhaust noise from other vehicles.

I also used them when racing the car. I prefer to use feel and instrumentation over the sounds of squealing tires and roaring exhaust, as it changes your focus.

We also use them at concerts and on airplanes. I use them when running lawn equipment and power tools for extended periods.

There may be other sources than Amazon.

As for the helmet, for the racing I was doing nothing fancy was required (SCCA SoloII, FAST or NASA), so I used a HJC open face. Sort of an old school style with a snap on visor (not a face shield). But what I learned was that trying on various brands and even styles within the brand was critical to good fitment. Do that at a shop, then shop online for better pricing, often the shop will match your online price + shipping.

I still have my very first helmet (Shoei RF-900) which i still use if I am going somewhere and will be strapping up my helmet to the bike for hours at a time. I use my Arai Quantum/f Okada Replica when I go on spirited rides.

You can certainly get a good FF lid for $100 or so.

    What about a modular?

HOWEVER, I cannot recommend a bright color (my HJC is hi-viz chartreuse) highly enough.

Shoei for me. I have a modular shoei and had them install sound, the modular's are a little load but not bad. I have the pin shields and they are great when its a little cold to help it not fog up.

Arai Corsair V. It's the best fitting and most comfortable helmet I've ever had.

I have a hell qualifier DLX since it had the SENA recessed port. Wind noise is fine after you tape the back left air vent but I still wear ear plugs when riding. I've found the moldex pura-fits to be the most comfortable.
They don't make this helmet in this color anymore, a shame if I ever need to get a new one. The transitions visor is a steal since it comes with the helmet. Total was about $175
