    Same as everybody else...
Whatever brand or type you choose the frame and the rest of the truck will give up before the engine does. I think the important thing is to use quality oil and filter and change it at the correct interval. These engines are known for their reliabilty, just read some of the high mileage threads. I choose synthetic with an OEM filter but the previous owner used dino but always changed by the dealer every 4-5k.

    V6 specifies 5W-30 and the I4 specifies 0W-20.

The numbers indicate the viscosity of the oil. The first number with the W is how the oil acts when cold, the second when it is hot. Higher the number the thicker the oil is (more viscous).

In a very general sense the lower viscosity the oil the less resistance is provides to the oil pump and potentially other parts of the engine. Some people go with lower numbers in the hopes of improving fuel economy. Mobil did a test showing moving from 40 to 30 cut fuel consumption by 1%. Problem is as you go with lower and lower viscosity oil (thinner oil) it does not provide adequate lubrication to protect the engine.

People in extreme climates (very very hot or very very cold) may find good reasons to use an oil different from the manufacturer recommendations (generally higher numbers in hot places, lower numbers in cold places). And in fact some owners manuals for some cars will indicate you can use a few different oil weights depending on your climate.

All that said I'd recommend running the recommended weight oil for your engine. Toyota designed the engine for a particular weight oil. Don't try to out think them unless your driving conditions are somehow really unusual.

Great! Thanks for the breakdown...i live in WI so we hit both sides of the spectrum in regards to hot/cold. That being said, I think just running 5W-30 will be fine year round here from what you explained.

I am doing my recon regarding oil changing as I am approaching my final 'free on at dealership. Fumoto valve also seems like a must for an amateur like me...

    Thanks again

Mobile 1 5w-30 @ 5000 miles, I've had engines come apart with expensive oils and cheap oils so don't think it matters to much as long as you change it often.

I like Pennzoil platinum ultra, also ran Rotella T6 5w-40 for two changes. As long as you use a quality oil & filter cant go wrong really.
