I put this in the detailing thread because I am sure there are other members out there with the same question .
These rims are approx 3 years old and the clear coat is peeling away making the rims look like crap . The picture below is one of the better rims . The clear coat can be removed with a finger nail fairly easy .
Up here in Canada , they were not the cheapest rims on the planet ...$900 bucks for 4 and they are nearly impossible to balance without hub centric rings .

Only used during summer months and the darn rims are still peeling .

I need some professional suggestions before i simply black them out .

Not much you can do other than repaint. On those I wouldn't bother with anything other than black out.

You can probably powdercoat the black but there is really no fixing them.

is there a way to safely remove the old clearcoat and apply a new one, without damaging the rim?

Nope. Wish I had better news.

On small clear coat chips on my oem rims, I got some Testors enamel (from the plastic model section at Hobby Lobby). I got it in "aluminum" color. And I just touch up the spots so they don't continue to spread. I bet a silver automotive paint pen would work better but I needed a quick fix and the Testors is holding up fine. But yours are too far gone for that kind of repair.

There's a product called "aircraft stripper ". Not sure what it will do to the black portion of the wheel. Mine was doing the same thing on my dodge ram and I used it to strip the clearcoat off and it left beautiful polished aluminum under neath. The only crappy part was after that you had to keep them polished all the time.
