I'm looking at upgrading my pioneer avh4400 to something with Apple carplay and have narrowed my choices to either the Appradio4 or the 4200NEX. The 4200 is about $100 more than the appradio so I'm leaning in the cheaper direction but wanted to hear some opinions first.

I dont' want to spend more than $500 and these 2 plus a couple types of Kenwoods are what i've found. I've read that kenwoods have a poor UI and I've had great luck with pioneers.

From what I understand either one of these will still use bluetooth to play music and sound so if I want to use Waze or Google Maps it'll still play through the speakers.

I mostly listen to spotify, which I'll be able to use with Carplay. I also listen to Stern on sirius with the phone app streaming over bluetooth, so the ability to connect sirius to the headunit isn't a requirement.

I never play cd's anymore so that's pointless for me.

Any thoughts and opinions are welcome, thanks!

I am personally waiting to see what alpine comes out with on their new models. They are supposed to have wireless CarPlay built in.

I've read about those but I'm assuming the price will be pretty high. I don't mind usb hard wired connection, I have a proclip phone mount with the charger built in that's already hardwired to my pioneer. I also think the initial wireless carplay stereos will likely have issues.

I'm also adding a 3rd option, I've read a few good reviews on this, same price as the 4200 NEX:
    Sony XAV-AX100
