A friend of my wife had a couple skulls that were neglected and not finished so I went and picked them up today. One 6x6 elk that was left out in the sun and still has rotted stuff in it. and a 10pt white tail that wasnt finished it is about half done, most of the tissue is off but it still needs some work. I have to soak the whitetail skull to loosen up the remaining material and the elk skull is going to be a little more work.

 

the deer skull is almost done, its currently getting the bleach treatment and then let it dry so I can clear coat it. It should turn out nice...The elk head is currently soaking in water. The idiot who was supposed to take care of it left it on the ground and the eye socket rotted out, the antlers were really bleached out...so I'll see what I can do...

 

Pics? Always interestedin restoration. I have an old set that is really bleached. Probably gonna try some antler magic on them.

 

Bleach isn't a good idea. It deteriorates the bone structure.

 

Hydrogen peroxide is the way to go. But then again I know nothing...

 

Agreed... It's sun bleached from years of being outside is what I meant...

I'll get some pics uploaded. the elk makes me sad as it was a nice looking rack before the idiot let it sit outside for about a year Im told...I use wood stain so I hope to salvage it, the best I can. The deer wasnt as bad shape so it will be good euro mount.

agreed, I use 40% peroxide and bleaching powder, which seems to do the bleach part but doesnt seem to deteriorate the bone like soaking or boiling in bleach solution.

 

Some action back from the season opener. This warm weather has the birds fired up way earlier than usual in the mountains.

 

I think they are a little behind here...its been colder than usual here. Season opened today along with bear so see what happens.

 

10pt or 5x5 buck getting bleach treatment and a coon skull, Elk skull getting gunk out of it...its in poor condition.

 

I rinsed the coon and deer skull just waiting for it to dry now.

 

Nice. I just spent the weekend figuring out that the birds here are already done. I think I may have to go back to fishing!

 

So heres an out of the box thinking...what would you think about using a sous vide immersion cooker to "boil" skulls? Gets almost to boiling temp, and for bigger animals would work great. Im thinking about trying it for this elk skull Im doing.

 

Blew out another set of boot this week.

 

I hope they aren't done! I'm headed to Cloudcroft on Thursday for a 3 day turkey hunt!
