I have searched on the forum but I cannot seem to find the torque specs for the transmission pan bolts on a 2004 taco. Id really appreciate the help. Also is there an over flow bolt in the 1st gen taco trans, if so where hell is it?

Im planning on changing the ATF fluid and filter, transfer case fluid and front/rear diff fluid tomorow. I just bought the truck and Im going out of town this weekend, so rolling down the highway with fresh fluids would be really nice!!!

as @nzbrock highlighted, inch pounds, do not over-tighten.

me, being the second time I've dropped the pan, just snugged them up good. kept an eye on them for the next week or so for any leaks. you may need to hit them again due to expansion/contraction

Thanks for the tips guys. I snugged them up pretty good. When i first removed the pan, the pan bolts were super loose but with no leaks at all. Most of the bolts could be removed by hand. Weird... i refilled up to the hot notched areas, but when i checked the level the next day with the engine cold. it was still at the hot level. Im not sure if i overfilled or not. Thoughts?

How hot was it when you filled to 'hot'? Like coming off the highway hot or sitting in the driveway idling hot"

    Driveway hot.

So with fear of having over filled it, i drained some out with the engine cold until the level hit the cold notched marks. I drove on highway about 5miles and checked again with highway hot engine and the level was still at the cold level.

So now its underfilled? Im confused.

if it's filled correctly cold it will be correct hot.

    Do some burnouts. :boink:

On a serious note: I always fill to the cold mark, in the driveway, idling for a while, shifting between gears. I don't know what Toyota specifies as far as Neutral or Park. It should say on the dipstick.

Thanks, i just checked the level yesterday. With a Cold engine it was up near hot on the stick. I drained more out and left it between cold and hot. Splittin the difference, F-it!

I believe it's operating temp in Park on level ground.

Hot is at least a 15 minute drive over varying terrain, shifting through the gears.

    it's low. I use "snug" as a measurement :)

I found 65 in/lbs to be too high. Torque on my other Toyota products, including the Lexus calls for 30-34 inb/lbs and that's what I used on the Taco. They all use same size pan bolts. Coming up on 50K since I did a filter change and have not had any leaks.
Here is a good guide torque setting guide if you can't find torque specs.
