Yes, i'd say at least half of the fluid has been flung everywhere all over the underbody.

 

Id use the RTV gasket. I would replace the axle seals. Its somewhat easy to damage then when removingthe axles.

 

I didn't need to replace axle seals, but blue RTV around the third member is a must

 

Im getting regeared in a week. Whats this I hear about a solid spacer? @northwesttaco

A crush sleeve holds the two pinion bearings apart and sets the bearing/pinion preload. As you tighten the pinion nut it will "crush" the sleeve. Most people swap out to a solid spacer, which is a machined piece of tubing with no place to crush. Then you change its height with shims instead of the "crush" method.
