2009 White Tacoma has Terrible paint!

My paint has been oxidizing for several years now. I know someone with a 2011 just like it and has the same problem. It looks awful, but my bf thinks it would be a waste to pay for a paint job because the truck is old. Is this common with the 2nd gen white Tacos?

I find that, the exact opposite. I own a white 06 and my single stage white has held up better than blue, red and black. OP, how bad is it.....? Clay bar goes a long way even if it's temporary

Your paint probably needs a full restoration with a porter cable polisher. It'll work wonders!

 

Most of my Toyota's have been white. White 2005 4Runner, white 2007 SE Camry, white (Blizzard Pearl) 2007 Solara CV and a white 2001 Corolla. My ordered 2017 Tacoma is also white. I love white because it's easy to take care of but since it's not clear-coated it will oxidize more than some if not taken care of properly. Best advise is to keep it waxed and do it often. Meguiar's G17216 Ultimate compound that'll bring it back to life. I just did this to my 2005 4Runner that hadn't been waxed in almost 7 years. I don't have a before picture but I'll include an after and you can see for yourself.

 

I live in South Carolina, near Charleston. No rust issues as of yet. The truck was a year old when I bought it and I almost immediately started noticing some dull spots. I use to have it hand waxed at least a few times a year, but the clear coat seemed determined to fail. These days I just give it a bath here and there and don't worry about the cosmetic so much. I would love a new paint job, but at this point, it's a work truck and it's reliable. I've never had anything serious go wrong with it and it's paid for. I've had a few minor electrical things happen, but nothing more. I really am curious about how this happens though. First car I've had this issue.

 

Isn't clear coated? I mean, I can see some clear coat on my truck still, but not much. At some point it had clear coat. Don't all vehicles have clear coat now?

 

Super White is single stage. Metallics generally are clear coated, everything else not. It's really not a big deal, have it professional buffed and waxed and wax it every 3-4 months thereafter.

 

I love my single stage white. The clearcoat will never peel. Mostly because it doesn't have any.

It's oxidized because it has not been cared for. Simple as that.

Periodic cleaning and waxing will keep it sparkly, never to oxidize. Now that it has, working the paint to get it prepped to wax will be an all day chore, using multiple steps of buffing and polishing. You may want to get some estimates from detailers for that part.

Since your BF isn't up to speed on the subject either, you might proceed with caution on other automotive advice he has to offer as well.

 

lol he certainly isn't a paint and body guy, but he has taken good care of it mechanically. When he found out I had never had my spark plugs changed he did it same day lol. I'm only good for oil and tire changes. Beyond that I have to google it or ask someone

My super white is 2 1/2 years old and looks as shiny as the day I bought it. Others are correct when they say that it needs to have wax or sealant (synthetic wax) applied regularly. I do mine religiously every two months. It's a ton of work but it is necessary if you don't want the single stage to fade. The good news is that as others stated, it's possible to bring a single stage back to life fairly easily if it is neglected and does fade. If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, you can take it to a reputable detail shop and i bet you'll be surprised with how well it comes out. Just make sure once this is done that you keep up on maintenance or else you'll be back in the same situation a year or two later.

 

"Almost immediately" means that whoever sold it buffed the piss out of it, right down through the clear coat (this is common with cars that have lived outdoors, and that "the clear coat seemed determined to fail" confirms same) , and applied something shiny to mask the damage they did.

That said I have had problems with white cars since a '68 Dodge Coronet 440 my ex had, and my current wife's '03 "Super White" HIghlander is not that great even thought it's been garaged since we got it in 2006. My '09 SW Taco is OK but the hood and top could use a good non-abrasive cleaning to look their best...

 

I have an 06 white Tacoma and I've struggled with the paint on this truck. I have buffed it and all kinds of stuff. I get a little bit of mud on it it's stains and you can't get it off unless your buff it with rubbing compound. I'm tired of buffing this truck
