Hey guys just found a 98 with 140k that a family member is thinking of getting rid of. I've searched the 4Runner forum. Got some good info. I saw some post about a 99 and part kits for tune up on Amazon. We have limited information but wife is getting more info tonight.

When we go see the rig, what are some common problems associated with this generation?

    Any info helps!

    Thanks. B

Expect it to be the last truck you'll own! I loved my third gen to death. I was in an accident resulting in it being totaled, and I'm looking for a new one.

There really aren't that many problems other than something called a "pink milkshake" which is when the transmission goes, but that is not common unless it has been neglected maintenance-wise. The only other thing is rust. It will probably have some frame rust, depending on where you are, but as long as there isn't any rot or through holes, they stay solid.

One thing nice about that generation of runners, they are all built in JAPAN.

If it has the V6 (likely does) find out when the timing belt was replaced, it it wasn't then you should get that done right away.
The 4-bangers have a chain, not a belt.

Bought mine at 180k 6 years ago. Now has 280k. Everything was original when I bought it.

    Parts that failed.
    1. Lower ball joint. Known fail. Fails more after lift which I had. At 140k I would replace oem only. $75 each bolt and out.

    2. Rear axle oil seal. $5 part. If wheel bearing fails this also needs replaced. I didn't need to replace wheel bearing.

    3. Fuel pump.

    4. Radiator. Known fail. Can mix tra trans fluid into trans and destroy trans. Known as pink milkshake. At 140k swap radiator.

Over all most reliable vehicle I ever owned. To me it's one of the best Toyota's you can buy.

The 3rz engine is great. Did you get an auto or manual?

Like I said before, we ripped out all the interior and in the process of painting and cleaning.

I removed the fenders and side steps and cleaned the engine so far
