Light comes on when there are exactly 3 gallons left in the tank and when my computer says 18 miles til empty or so like clock work; have tested this twice and each time it says 18 miles til empty and right when the light comes on. I fill 18 gallons in my tank. A conservative guess is that I have about 45 miles of fuel truly left. Usually a full tank yields 365 miles til empty on the computer. So I can assume at 18 miles left that I have 1 gallon left but I really have 3. So I divide 365/19 (computer calculates based on 19 gallons not 21.1)= 19.2mpg and my computer comes to 19.5 mpg average which is darn close. 19.2 mpg x 21.1 gallon tank is 405 miles. My conservative estimate of 1 tank at 365 miles + (3 gallons when fuel light comes on x 15mpg) = 410 miles

Maximum driving distance based on my driving habits leaves a conservative estimate of 400 mile range

Extended gas tank with 34 gallons could yield a possible 650 mile range

    Gen2 here

According to my scan tool the sending units reads 19.2 gal with tank packed full.

The idiot light comes on at the next to last tick mark.

From last tick mark (E) I can pack 19gal which leaves 2gal from E and 3gal when the light comes on assuming each tick marks represents 1gal.

So it appears the fuel gauge range E -F represents 19gal leaving 2gal reserve pass the E mark and 3gal from the light.

I drove my Gen2 to 420 miles almost every tank before filling. Lost the gas game by about 400 feet once, no damage to fuel pump or injectors, ego only. Plan on doing the same with this one.

3rd gen is the same. Mine leaves 3 gallons left with the light on saying I only have 18 miles til empty.

Your gas light comes on before the Warning on the dash LCD? I don't think I even have a dash light...

When I did my first test drive they gave me a truck with 1 mile left until empty. Salesman told me don't worry you still can go another 50 miles or so.

Mine got down to 3 miles to empty today, I put 17.9 gallons in and put me well over full. You guys are definitely right on the 3 gallon reserve. Made me nervous for a second there.

Some of you guys mentioned reserve and on my 57 bug yeah it had no gas gauge AT ALL and all you did was drive until it started running out of gas and then you would kick a lever to the side and this would open the reserve which was about another gallon.

holy shit this is old. I was not replying to you, I was replying to the guy posting random google information about 'urban myths'.

Our posts basically said the same thing, I'm slightly confused as to your reply. I've worked on many ~3000 ton hydraulic presses (those are BIG pumps), among many other industrial machines, so I'm more than qualified to discuss thermal issues with regards to pumps.

It's the liquid/medium running through the pump that cools/lubricates it, not the pump being submerged in anything

An unusually high amount of pinstriping.

Ah the good old days, where running out of gas didn't mean a 1k repair bill for a new pump and anything else that burned up. I had an old Chevy pickup with the same thing. I let my sister barrow it one afternoon to help a friend move. Half way home she ran out of gas and ended up walking the six miles home. When I asked her why she didn't flip the lever for the reserve I thought she was going to punch me.
