Kind of a long, dumb story here filled with regret and illogical thinking:

I purchased a Tacoma Limited last year so that I could go to Lowes without putting a trailer on my wife's MDX. At the time I just needed to be able to get some plywood, load the truck with mulch, etc... I loved the truck (MGM) but was always blown away by how terrible the suspension was. We went to the outer banks where I drove it on the beach and any air of the truck having off-road skills disappeared. That bummed me out.

Anyway, fast forward 6000 miles and I have a new interest: Overlanding. This summer my 11 year old son and I are going to try to complete the Trans-America Trail so I obviously need a vehicle with a locking diff, crawl control, and a competent suspension would be really handy too so I am trading in the Tacoma for a 4Runner (looking for a TRD Pro but realize I will probably have to go with a Off-Road Premium).

Before I get flamed for switching to a 4Runner, I just want to point out that it is a financial decision: Rigging a Tacoma for the trip is going to be more expensive (topper) and in the future my wife expressed interest in overlanding so having a car that is comfortable for 3 people makes sense.

So here's the stupid part: 10 days ago (prior to getting the Overlanding bug or really thinking the whole thing through) I ordered a Bilstein 6112/5160 with Headstrong progressive AAL and Light Racing UCAs (about $1800 worth of stuff) that is now due to be delivered in the next few days, just in time for my Tacoma to be gone. Yay, I'm a dumbass.

I am trying to find some upside here. Will the 6112 shocks work on a 4Runner? Will the UCAs? I have pretty much resigned myself to having to sell it all on the Buy/Sell/Trade board but it would be awesome if there was any upside.

    Anyone?

Headstrong has a 25% restocking fee PLUS I would have to ship it back from NC to Headstrong on the west coast... Kind of have to eat it.

6112 front shocks and LR UCAs will still fit. But you will need new rear shocks and rear lift coils. Selling or returning the remaining parts shouldn't be too bad, esp considering how much of a loss you would be taking with the trade in. Good luck! Gotta pay to play.

    KenLyns,
You know your shit. I spoke with Dustin @ FN Wheels and he told me the exact same thing which was AWESOME. Still need to unload the 5160s and the Headstrong AAL but those are the cheaper components anyway. Made my day.

The shocks will physically fit, however your lift heights will not correlate with anyone else and you may end up with some very undesirable lift heights. Either much higher than you wanted or much lower. Bilstein lists 2 different PN between 4runner and tacoma. Also i would expect your warranty to voided with Bilstein should you have a problem as it is a wrong application.

At a 25% restocking fee, i would find a new vendor...

Thanks for bumming me out. I was obviously feeling too good about my day lol.

Alright, I might have to sell those too. That sucks.

Go into @smitty99 's super informative 6112/5160 thread about the install and see if he minds you posting in there and giving his thread followers a heads up that you'll be putting the setup in the 3rd gen marketplace for sale. Should get a lot of attention in there.

No need to overthink this one:
    • Both SKUs come with springs in the 600 lb range, way stiffer than stock.
    • Ride height will vary depending on what bumpers and skid plates are put on.
    • The 6112 shock has 6 circlip positions for the spring perch for fine adjustment of ride height.

So you think this might work? I think they both use 600# springs. I think the difference might be spring rates... I will call Bilstein. Doubt they will give the answer I want but who knows... Anyone know the stock front end weight difference between a Tacoma and a 4Runner?

Bilstein is going to tell you to use the right parts (part numbers that match your specific application) for the vehicle. They will likely shut you down and/or say they don't recommend it as they are not specifically designated for your vehicle. Yes he is telling you it will work. Bilstein might not, just for legal reasons.

They weigh the same over the front wheels...
    4Runner 2555 lb: http://media.caranddriver.com/files...-review-car-and-driver2014-toyota-4runner.pdf
    Tacoma 2550 lb: http://media.caranddriver.com/files...2016toyotatacomalimiteddoublecabtestsheet.pdf

It's interesting to see the Taco get better braking performance, despite having smaller front rotors and rear drums.

The irony of this whole thing is that Smitty is the one that convinced me to go with the 6112/5160 setup lol.

Which items are you interested in? I have
Will do. I actually have a bunch of new, uninstalled parts that ordered days before I decided to trade the truck in.

1/ Light racing UCAs (unopened in box)
2/ Bilstein 6112 with springs setup at 3/4 settings (1-1.5 inch of lift, unopened)
3/ Bilstein 5160 remote reservoir rear shocks (unopened)
4/ Headstrong Offroad 3 Leaf Progressive AAL (unopened)
5/ EC Bushing fix / needle bearing replacement kit with removal tool (unused/uninstalled)
6/ 2017 Tacoma TRD Pro wheels and brand new d-rated Nitto Terra Grapplers (x5). Only 300 miles. Posted already here:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...applers-x5-tpms-x4-1300.487494/#post-14967914

Going to figure out what stuff I can use on the 4Runner (maybe UCAs, maybe 6112) and then sell the rest here. I'll let you know when I do.

^You may need the ECGS bushing on the 4Runner as well.
Indeed, especially since Rancho offers the same P/Ns for its front shocks across all 2005-2017 Tacos and 2003-2017 4Runners (without XREAS).
