Have you thought about buying a foam mattress in whatever style and size you want or buying a foam topper and cutting it to size? If you go that route be sure to get a cover for it. I bought a memory foam topper from Wal-Mart then cut it to size to use in my old VW camper. Two things I found out by experience are that memory foam seems to be hotter in the summer and it starts getting harder as temperatures drop below about 35F. For the pickup, I usually use a Cabela's Alaskan Guide (which wouldn't work for your short bed) but I've also got another foam topper from Wal-Mart that I cut down to fit. Together they make for a good night's sleep.

No experience with them personally but I've seen folks recommend these guys as well.

I'm thinking about using two Thermarest sleeping pads and my comforter from the roof top tent as a make-shift bed for now. For one, I already have these items. Two, removing the comforter from the roof top tent will allow it to fold up better. I was thinking about finding a futon mattress for back here, but this is really meant as a quick and temporary solution for stealth camping where I don't have time, or can't find a place to open the roof top tent.

I have a shell on mine too. Who makes a rack that goes over a shell? I'm talking about the kind that mount to the bed rails then go up and over the shell.

Probably have better luck starting your own thread, rather than asking in this one.

I found this guy on YouTube explaining what he uses when camping out of his truck. He does a great job at explaining what he uses and why. Not sure if he's here on the forums.

The 1x6's are 57" wide. The plywood pieces are a bit under 28.75" in width including carpet.

Now I'm looking at finding someone to gift the platform to because I added a SnoMaster fridge which I have mounted back there. And I swapped the Leer cap for an A.R.E. Z-series which has much less ventilation than the Leer. So no more room for a sleeping platform.

Hey OP, I'm about 56 miles away, in Harford county. Any chance you ever go past York or Lancaster? I have a Leer 100xr and I've thought of trying a platform in it

I don't go past those places, but they are not far. Between 30 and 45 minutes. I can meet up with you some evening if you want. I live in Harrisburg and work in Hershey.

Nice work! I'm looking to do the same thing with mine until I get the time to build a proper platform/drawer setup. I'm 5'9" and have a short bed, but it'll be plenty of room since I sleep in the spooning position . Is 3/4" plywood the way to go or could you get by with 5/8?

I'm a big boy....i used 5/8" and it has zero give when I climb in there. I needed that extra 1/8" of height!
