Jim burnworth from the show western extreme gave a super cool talk here in Oregon and he swears by the reign. I'm jealous. Got a hoyt charger that I am a fan of. Kills deer

Hey guys I have a Q. I'm going to buy new arrows before my next deer hunt and I need help with brand, model, size, etc.

I have a Matthews Chill. I believe it is set at 68lbs, 27.5" draw length, and 100 grain tips. Smaller arrow is better? Basspro brand is gold tip?

I don't practice much if at all until a little before deer season.

I like GT arrows check your chart but depending on length of arrows I'd say 340 is the way you should go. If you get to light of an arrow it will deflect and you wont be accurate.
    https://www.goldtip.com/Resources/Spine-Chart.aspx

also you should practice more just to keep in shape

agreed, 340's, with center shot compound risers it's better to be a hair on the stiff side than too weak spined. Also if you don't cut your own arrows, too stiff is easier to adjust by just going to a little heavier point. As for the brand, size, etc., a lot is personal preference. I've had good luck with GoldTips, Easton. Shooting Easton's mostly lately.

Also agree on practice practice practice... both for keeping in shooting shape but also for confidence. You don't want to be "fairly sure" whether you can make a good shot on an animal, you want to know 1000% you're going to make it.

Nice, still hunt with a compound, but mostly been shooting recurve lately. They're just so darn satisfying to shoot!

Thank you. I'm trying to use the chart attached to that link. What should my arrow shaft length be?

I need to practice more but for some reason I never seem to do it until season comes around.

All of my buddies when I got my first bow told me gold tip was the way to go. Im going to check out the Easton bloodlines as well. (Not that I know what I am checking out but good reviews.)

340 is how much the arrow weighs or the spine? How long should my arrows be?

340 is the spine. Spine isn't really correlated to weight, you can get a 340 spine that weighs less than 8 grains per inch all the way up to 15+ gpi.

People differ on length a lot. Some shoot shorter, it just needs to be a little bit in front of your rest. I like the broadhead to be out in front of the bow (and my hand) so I shoot a 28-29" arrow (same draw length as you 27.5). Totally fine to shoot longer too, but as you go shorter/longer the dynamic spine will change. Think of a piece of 2x4 lumber, you'd be hard pressed to bend a one foot long board, but if you get a 12 foot long 2x4 you can bend it easy. Same idea with arrows, so a longer arrow will "act" softer i.e. have a weaker dynamic spine. If you're really not sure, go in to a local archery shop and they'll help find a good match, I've always found actual archery shops to be super friendly and willing to help. but for arrow lengths around your draw length 340 should suit you well at that poundage.

Makes sense. You just sparked my memory. The guy that set me up before (now deceased) cut my previous arrows 29". Also if I type in 29" into the gold tip site linked above it says to use a 300 arrow?

I'm just trying to go into the archery shop semily knowing what I'm getting rather than realizing I made a mistake.

GT have been good to me, great for practice as they hold up well. And I use what I shoot with to hunt with as well so I know how they fly. Its really preference and what shoots best in your bow.

I think mine is 27" drawlength and I have 27.25 for length without broad head. I use 100gr tips, I borrowed a friends 125 gr field tip for practice and I could tell they were moving just a bit slower than my 100 gr. It really isnt going to make much difference on weights but you need to stick with one consistent weight so you know where you are shooting.

If you don't have an archery shop close where they can let you shoot a couple different spines, and don't want to spend money on a half dozen arrows of each, shoot me a PM with your address, I've got tons of arrows I don't shoot anymore, I'll send you a couple 300 and a couple 340. They're 28" Gold Tip Pro and Hunter XT I think. They've changed the names since then but spines will be the same. I really think at 28" with a light 100 gr. tip you'll find the 340's will be better. like @wilcam47 said, once you settle on a point weight/arrow combo that shoots well, stick with it so your shooting the same point of impact. And have fun shooting! You'll shoot more that way

I'll check with a couple local archery shops this week and see if they'll let me shoot a few arrows. And thank you VERY much for the offer and advice.

It's amazing! I compared a bunch of bows before making the big purchase and this one stood out for me! I'll be having this bow for awhile!

@AKSig88 @JKO1998 sorry to hop on the convo, but I really want to try the quivilizer. Since I run a stabilizer and a quiver, might as well drop weight and combine them
