    Yup.

Blows peoples mind that walmart brand oil is just as good as those oils that cost twice as much.

    5 qts M1 = $26 at Walmart.
    5 qts house brand synth= $18.

    5 qts Mobil dino = $15
    5 qts house dino = $12

Not quite twice. And how many times do you need to change your oil before an $8 (or $3) difference begins to matter?

do you think the dealer is not going to honor a engine related lubrication issue because you changed the oil/filter sooner than the manufactuers recomendations? The oil can "go" that mileage but the filter cant. Ask for your old oil filter back next time and cut it open and then cut open a new filter and compare the condition of the filter material. Once you actually see just how little filtration there is you will go back to the 3k intervals.

You paid between $25k and $35k for the pickup. Additional oil changes on your dime might cost you $100 a year more. Kind of a penny wise pound foolish approach if you ask me.

And what it that turns the oil black? That is carbon and what is carbon? well its a grinding compound. Do we really want a grinding compound down in our main bearings and cam shafts? I'll change my oil.

Well, depends on the crystalline form of the carbon. After all, carbon runs the gamut from graphite to diamond. ;)

Some fraction of Diesel soot at least is hard enough to abrade metal parts in engines.

Of course the point of the filter is to remove anything large enough to be a problem and the oil holds harmless sized stuff in suspension.

Diesel oil turns black before you can get the vehicle off the lift. In gasoline engines some of the additives darken very quickly even if there is no carbon soot in suspension.

Bottom line color of oil is not a useful indicator of anything.

At some point a filter starts using its bypass valve and the oil either shears or depletes its additive package.

10k miles for me with Mobil 1 Extended Performance and Toyota oil filter. That equates to about an annual oil change and it's not that dirty.

I do 5k change with synthetic, but I am not so OCD that I feel obligated to change the oil at the time. I just leave the maintenance light on so that I don't forgot. I do synthetic because it's cheap from BJ's club.

10 OCI seems like about as far as you can stretch an oil change even with synthetic not because the oil wont lubricate properly but because of the dirt and grime contaminates that build up in the oil, I would feel more comfortable doing a7500 mile interval with the full synthetic. also with the MOBIL1 and Pennzoil rebates going you can do a full syn OCI for well under $20.

I use Mobile 1 and since having my Taco, have changed it twice. First time was when I first got the truck, just so I could know it had a fresh change and what was in there. Previous owner always brought it in to the dealership every 5000 miles. My 2nd oil change was not quite 5000 miles, but did at 55,000 on the odometer, just because thats how I am.

I always change my oil at my Dad's house with his help. With all our previous vehicles, he was very old school in you had to do it at 3000 miles or every 3 months. On my old car, I was using Mobile 1 also, but I was going 4500 to 5000 miles without telling him. My Brother and I both tried convincing my Dad that by using Mobile 1 Synthetic and changing at 3000 we were just wasting good oil, but he said thats how its always been done.
Well, I went several years without a vehicle until I got this Taco, and when I brought it over to show my Dad and we changed the oil, he finally was going every 5000 miles between changes. But now you guys are saying we can go 10,000 to 15,000 between changes??? He will never believe this lol.

I'm in the same boat as the guys saying 5000 miles is about 6 months (if I even put that many miles on it) and comes out to about 2 oil changes every year.

Where can I send my used oil in for testing and how do I go about doing that? I'd like to see the results, even though I would probably still change at 5000. Just because I like to keep inline with the miles on the truck= I know I will need a change at 60,000 and I know I will need another when I get to 65,000 etc.
I look at using the synthetic as its there in case Im in a situation where I just cannot change the oil...I can safely go to 7500 miles without changing it if I need to.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic and change at 5K. I don't believe in extending if your using synthetic. The synthetic still has just as much dirt in it as conventional oil after 5K.

The filter is what you really need to replace, oil lasts much longer than even 5k miles with proper filtration.

If you use a good quality oil filter, and not necessarily a synthetic filter, you can easily go 10K with synthetic oil. I've had two oil samples tested and results show I can easily go 2-3K more, but I'm happy at 10K. Easier to remember when to change the oil too. I had been using Mobil 1 Extended; current oil is Valvoline MaxLife. Current filter is Purolator One (blue canister, not the yellow one).
