Hi everyone- been doing a bit of reading on here on the Limited having the same shocks as the SR/SR5. And seeing many bilstein OR stock shocks for sale, is a guy better off upgrading?

For those who have changed out the limited shocks for the OR shocks, what can you tell me?

I drive a ton for work, a more refined highway ride would be nice but tell me if I'm way off?

I just made the changer over to BFG KO2 LT 275/70R17 tires along with Bilstein 6112 Series Front Kit and 5160s on the rear and the ride and handling both on and off pavement is excellent.

My understanding is that the stock TRD OR shocks are "softer" on-road but better off-road. Combing through countless threads here, the 6112 and 5160 setup is the direction I'm leaning and Smitty's write up is on point.

I have an OR and would say the shocks are soft and it really helps with the crappy NJ roads but it leans on cornering and reminds me of a 2nd gen Dakota, I've come to like it and understand why they use them for off road.

Just changed my Limited shocks to Bilstein 5100's... night and day difference in how it drives, so much nicer, flatter, smoother, more stable.

I just swapped out the rear Hitachi OEM shocks for 5100s. I should have the front done by next week's end.
I have to watch the vid a few more times...then grow the balls needed to take on the job.

^^^ That or Smitty99's setup too.... Want to ditch the lean get 885 springs up front and Progressive AAL's for the rear and that will give you about 2" lift.

The 5100s are similar to the OR Billy's as far as valving... softer smoother ride on and off road. Change out the front springs and AALs tighten everything up quite a bit without adding any harshness to the highway ride.

My OR drives pretty well. I like the feel of the stock suspension, much more than my old TRD sport suspension.

Perfect. I had a '12 TRD Sport and it was ok but I find the 2016 limited shocks are a bit lacking in soaking up bigger bumps on rough roads

Limited should have the same blue hitachi junk my sport came with. Ride with an empty bed was terrible especially in the rear. I 2nd (or like 8th) the 6112/5160 combo. Rear shocks are quick and easy but the front is a fair amount of labor. If i was doing it or paying for it i wouldnt be installing slightly better oem junk. Reason so many or shocks for sale is because they arent that great but probably slight improvement over hitachi

Huh. I did suspension on someones 16 sr-something and it had same blue hitachi junk my sport did. Either way oem is oem. Thats the reason so many selling them wether or, sport or whatever those black ones are. Point being you are probably looking at 4 hours plus to do shocks all around. Most shops going to get 350+ for that job. I wouldnt cheap out on parts that are a pita to replace. 5100 are a very affordable setup, think i paid just under 1k shipped for my 6112/5160 combo but mine is technically for 2nd gen

Getting rid of the factory bilstein's on my OR and taking off the sway bar were some of the best things i've done, although I had both for 70,000 miles. Instantly got rid of that stiff ride, love it now.

How was the ride after you only swapped the rears? I'm considering the same. Was it much stiffer?
