Sorry if this has been discussed before... I have a 2012 Tacoma with the 4.0. I moved the secondary air pump when I installed a K&N intake. It worked fine for a day and then the check engine light came on and I lost power. Kinked hose from the air pump was the culprit. It's been a year and now I'm losing power again, although not as bad. You can drive down the road, and it will accelerate up to 50-60, as long as you're in the OD gear. If it drops down into a lower gear, like when you would pass or going up a hill, it drops power fast. Check engine light is back on and the code says air pump.

Does this sound like a problem anyone else has run into? I don't want to shell out the hundreds of dollars for the part if it's not going to fix it. I have heard this was an issue with the Tundras, which used the same part. Mechanic never heard of it with a Tacoma and the local Toyota dealership wants $1,500 to fix it. I can buy the pump online for $300.

    Thanks!

Do you have any check engine lights on? You should only be losing power if in limp mode from the check engine light. I don't think that system runs anytime besides startup and shut down so it shouldn't cause these symptoms. Maybe someone with more experience can chime in but it sounds like there is something else going on too.

The Check engine light came on back when I first moved the air pump a year ago, but I never had an issue. Had it in a shop to fix a taillight wiring problem and they cleared the light, but it came back on the same day (about two moths ago) but it still ran fine. Now it is in limp mode. I'm going to go run the codes again today to see if there is something funky going on.

I have the failing valves and got a check engine light about a week ago. They failed closed so it never went into limp mode. I've cleared it and haven't had it since. You may have the valves failing open and causing the limp mode.

Now that I think about it, the limp mode started as I was driving down the road going around 50mph. Would this only be the valves/air pump right at start up? It started ok - not great Ran rough and was louder. Then about 5 miles down the road - limp mode.
