Hi I am new to the Tacoma and the TRD PRO just took delivery 2 days ago and so far love the truck, I did opt for the automatic. The truck has not seen anything but smooth pavement yet. I was on a very steep hill yesterday, took my foot off the gas and the truck started rolling backwards and making a clicking sound. I would have assumed it should hold in place. I was in 2wd when it occurred. Is that normal?

Why would you think it should have stayed in place? no brakes, and no opposing force to gravity, gravity will win.

really, not sure I have ever had a vehicle stay on a hill without brake or something, however I have driven a manual for 20 plus years and some do have hill assist now.

    all tore up already
Hill start assist is very common and i think most at tacos have it. Dont think the or or pro do due to different brake boosters

Appreciate the feedback. I have driven both stick and automatics for many years. I get the point about gravity but most cars/trucks I have been in that situation with an automatic trans, vehicle stays put. The rolling backwards was a slight surprise but the clicking like it was in crawl mode was different. It was a pretty steep incline. Tried it again today on a hill which was less radical and stayed put.

    Anyway appreciate the comments.

Yea the hill start assist sucks. On every other vehicle I've driven with hill start assist it doesn't roll at all.

I've heard that if you put the truck in park and turn off ignition the hill start assist kicks in but I haven't tested that yet. Makes sense though.

My 2013 wrangler Rubicon could be on a seriously steep incline and never budged so I know what you mean about being surprised, I was myself initially.

    Lots of sail boat fuel
The MT have 3 hill assists. Hand brakes, clutch cancel, and driving skills haha.
