I believe it's the same. 08' or 09' was the last year of the mechanical LSD, newer years are electronic LSD (From what I understand)

For those of you with a rear locker on your Prerunner, how often do you activate it? I only use mine occasionally but always worry if I don't use it it will seize up eventually, so I try to at least activate it once in a while

You can get an SR5 or base with an open diff. You could also get the TRD off road (what I have) with a locking rear diff.

1st gens are either open or TRD O/R with a locking diff.

You got a truetrac? Hell yeah! :woot:

I'm more worried about using it on ground with too much traction and breaking the gears. I use mine when I want to slide around or going over something slowly where I could potentially get stuck. Obviously off road only, not on the street, but as long as you're in dirt/sand you should be safe

If they were that easy to break, I would have done it a lonnngggg time ago. I've activated mine on the street multiple times (on accident).

    Ditto :anonymous:

I mostly am referring to a recent trip where climbing up a mostly rock trail I had my locker on in some spots going up the bigger rocks. I didn't want to somehow catch myself in a spot where I could have sheared a gear. Unlikely, yes, but I'd hate to break something in the middle of nowhere.

These pics don't really do the trail justice, and not the section I'm talking about but hey more pics and it kinda gives the idea. Just bummed as to how flat it looks when it was actually pretty steep haha.

Edit: as in spinning and then one tire suddenly catches while the momentum from the other shears a gear. Again, unlikely but feels better making it up open if I can anyways.

I completely understand, but I don't think I few "accidental" mishaps will do any damage. Unless you had a lot of momentum, I think one would be fine. I've engaged mine on asphalt going 10+ miles an hour. Toyota wasn't really smart by placing the fog light switch right next to the locker

My 4wd friends w/o lockers get so pissed when I drop this knowledge bomb on them. I tell them since I have a true locker we're the same!

4WD open/open still provides more traction than 2WD locked. Don't get me wrong, I totally root for anyone out there wheeling any vehicle. You just have to face reality about it sometimes.

^ Same. One wheel in the front and back is more beneficial. Fully aware of the reality of it and the disadvantage only having rear drive wheels, but getting out on a trail and camping miles and miles away from civilization is what it's all about.
