I got a price to powder coat the OE steel wheels on my 2008 . Between $100and $125 each . This obviously included blasting and cleaning first . Going to use them for winter . Is this too steep of a price ?

That's consistent with the pricing that I've seen.

I always thought it was a crazy thing to do, when you could just buy a set of alloy wheels for alomst the same money, and they'll look a ton better.

Price is ok, but not worth the $400ish IMHO, well, for those specific wheels.

Clean them up nicely and paint with self etching primer and color of your choice. Next spring, wash and repaint. You can even change colors to suit your current tastes or trends. :D

Or buy a set of stock OE alloys for that price, clean them well and put on a few coats of clear if you like that look ok.

Now if you had a set of the 17" FJ wheels, powdercoating them white would be hot with your truck...........

Powder coating them would sure make them last though. Do it once, do it right, and forget it.

That price looks about average. I've seen it done for $65 before. You may be able to get it done cheaper if you do the prep work yourself. The powder coating part is easy, it's getting all the old paint and rust of the rim that's a PITA.

Plasti dip every few years. Powder coat fails also. Spending $400 on a bumper to have it chip and rust is pretty depressing. Lol.

That is pretty depressing. I've been debating having my bumper done, but ultimately decided if I do, I'll just buy an aftermarket bumper instead. $400 would go a long way toward one.

I agree with this. Recently I had the same choice. Couldn't pay the $$! Good prep work and paint will make your wheels come out good and plus with spray paint you can touch up scratches/chips, unlike powder coating.

    X2 on painting yourselfIMG_3160.jpgIMG_3221.jpg

This is my 4th set of painted wheels and the ability to touch up is why I keep doing it.

To touch up powdercoat you have to remove the tire from the wheel and remove your wheel weights and get the tire mounted and balanced all over again with the possibility of the installer scratching the lip

I toss some index cards between the lip and tire and wrap my brakes and lugs to prevent over spray and give it a couple coats

Most durable coating for steel bumpers and skids is bedliner.

Colors and smoother than budget spray ons are available from www.monstaliner.com

Look around their site at creative things folks have done.

That looks like the exact color I had mine powdercoated.

Like everything, there are upsides, and downsides. Downside to powdercoating is/can be price. Also, if you have centercaps you want to match, you'll have to find spray paint anyways, since most places can't powdercoat plastic. Upside is the strength of the finish.

Powder coating is a good option but I would stick to single coating. No clear coat. As double baking puts your wheels at risk. I would avoid powder coating forged wheels as they can crack. $100 per wheel is a fair price. Many Toyota wheels are made by Rota so they should be safe to powder coat.
