You haven't been Overlanding until you've been forced at gunpoint to fork over your passport in the Atacama desert by Chilean drug smugglers. Or used your expo harpoon just to get enough whale blubber to coat your canvas RTT for waterproofing in Quinhagak to survive a cold arctic night. That being said, I'm just a car camper.

I'm stoked that overlanding had become popular. Products are way cheaper and more obtainable. It's a great hobby that makes camping easier so you get out more and spend more time enjoying the trip instead of trying to organize all the camping gear and dealing with all those fucking poles. You used to have to know a guy who was dating the daughter of a South African diamond smuggler to get a decent RTT. Now you can get one at REI. I wouldn't know since I've never owned one...

In my opinion "overlanding" can't be defined. It's a state of mind. A way of life. A name I call myself. A drop of golden sun. A long long way to run. A needle pulling thread... you know the rest.

I don't know what I'm talking about so don't listen to me. Listen to the voices in your head- unless they're telling you to burn things.

I figure, if you're travelling over land, then that pretty well sums it up. Other options may include, but are not limited to "over watering", "over airing", and "over the mooning". Currently I am "over hard wood flooring".

Wife used whale fat as insulation for her body when she swam the English Channel. Good stuff.

    Epic post btw.

Ha! I didn't see the thread until @jberry813 linked it before noon, went to a few meetings, and wrote it in the Chipotle parking lot. Ordered online and had to wait 15 minutes for my food. This isn't Russia, or a wedding, or a Russian wedding, and I'm not standing in line for food.

I don't stray out of the NorCal thread unless someone links something. Down the rabbit hole for hours if I do.
