2005 PreRunner 2.7L 4 cyl. I have 191,000 miles on her without a timing chain/belt change. Do I have a belt or a chain and should I get this changed or not?

    Chain.

You can use the Gates site to find parts available for vehicles. If a TB isn't listed, it's a chain. They'll also call out interference vs non-interference engine designs

    http://www.gates.com/all-search-tools/search-by-application

You might change it at that mileage when you go in after something else, like a water pump or other things in that area. Otherwise, if it's not noisy, leave it alone.

I haven't noticed any noise with the chain but on cold start up I can hear that little bit of valve rattling for about 30 seconds or so. The chain just makes me nervous. I had a 93 regular cab 4WD that the timing chain broke on me.

I would be more nervous with a belt, than a chain.

I have never seen a timing chain break. I have seen worn timing gears and a chain jump a tooth or two, but never a broken chain.

Oh you silly flybpys... ( joking)

I think you are confused, or I am old and crazy... never mind that last part...

The 1993 T100 Trucks had the 3VZ-E V6 engine? That engine has a Timing Belt and not a Chain. So you must have broken a timing belt. As a general rule timing chains do not break and should last as long as the truck. The biggest issue would be a chain guide wearing.

Both the 4 and the 6 had belts, no chains.

    Both are interference fit engines.

    That must have been ugly!

Ran my '07 to about 300k never changed the timing chain. You should be good for at least another 100k! The 2.7 has more than one timing chain because of the vvti.

It was a 1993 4WD single cab toyota. I was in a parking lot back in my college days and just started my truck and heard a loud bang come from under the hood and my truck shook and quit. I pulled the dipstick and it looked like white milk. Towed it to my mechanic who is a Toyota expert and said timing chain broke. It damaged rods, rings and other stuff. $1,800 later I basically had a new engine with the exception of the pistons.

The 4 cylinder Accords started using chains in '03, 6 cylinders all used belts in that generation.

I you keep clean oil in the motor and drive like a reasonably sane person the chain will last the life of the car be it 200K or 500K miles.

I've only heard of one timing chain issue. My buddies dad still has an 08 or so Suzuki XL7, which has had the timing chain replaced 4 times! Other than that I have never heard personally of timing chain issues with any brand.

I wouldn't worry about changing it if it were my truck.

It's all about the maintenance (oil and filters), the variable timing engine oil passages used to operate the camshaft actuators are so small now, it doesn't take much dirt or debris to plug them up. Some makes are more tolerant to low or dirty oil, some are not...Nissan and Infiniti motors are the worst I've seen, run it low and dirty for just a few thousand miles and the chain stretches beyond the ability of the tensioner to keep it tight. Causes drivability issues and worst case no starts and engine damage. Mazdas are bad too...I could go on and on

That was my point, in 1993 3VZ-E engine in the Toyota T100 Truck had no chain to break.

    It was a belt

All Toyota 3RZ-FE engines used a double-chain set. 1 timing chain, and 1 balance shaft chain.

Well, he never once said it was a T100. He said it was a 93 regular cab 4x4. I assumed he was talking pickup (hilux) not T100. If it was a regular cab hilux, very likely a 22RE. With a chain.

Sorry, I guess I needed some discussion.

Also the 22re was famous for wearing out chain guides and jumping timing. Not to mention most Toyota regular cabs come with a 4cyl from the factory.

No. 2003 Accord 2.4 is K series. Has a chain. The V6 J series have the belts.
