This dude pretty much nailed it. Its pretty expensive and you'll be without your truck for a while.

I'm not trying to talk you out of it, I say do it if you know what you're getting into.

If you have deep pockets I'm sure Wyatt would love to do a 16 next.

Classic bronco or scout, oldschool Toyota pick up or classic land cruiser maybe even an old 4runner. Why do uou want to destroy the suspension on a 35 to 40 thousand dollar vehicle and then drop another 15 grand in parts and labor into it. Also it will play hell on the electronics systems in the new vehicle with all of the sensors braking systems and idiot lights. Wasteful

I disagree on the wasteful part. Costly... No doubt. And I do realize for 15 grand I could throw together a built crawler and smash it to hell at will and drive my Tacoma home. But being able to drive to work and wheel in the same vehicle is the allure. I am looking into what it would cost to do a mid travel that would suit my needs.

Not a fan of old Broncos. I did drive an IH scout a long long time ago. Had lightly modded XJ. I had an 85 runner crawler , my original DD crawler. I considered a LC but that too would be costly, I like the luxury of the new truck, I would like to take that wheeling. If I built a LC upgraded the FJ80 axles built it right with the creature comforts well$$$

So I appreciate the realism. And I did say which ever would be more cost effective would be my more likely choice. Mind not made just yet.

Mind made up. Mid travel it will be. Why?
What am I going to really use it for... DD and occasionally play on some trails. This was decided after the wife gave me the OK to get a Polaris 4 seater to take her and the kids in places I don't want to take the truck.

So with that in mind. Instead of full crawler, Will be going mild trail truck.

    General plan for now
1 armor - front& rear bumpers, sliders, skid plates
    2 mid travel lift
    3 wheels and tires
4 extras - lighting, winch, etc

    As of today 5/31/16
Tailgate reinforcement from mob town arrived to be installed soon. Order placed for cbi t3 bumper. Aluminum w/ powder coat, mid grille guard. Reason I went aluminum: lighter, I will be running steel in the back bumper and steel sliders. A little less weight on the nose will help better balance my weight. mild trail truck , steel not mandatory I will use it knowing its aluminum. Mid grill guard, not full crawler. Powder coat, it's hawaii we get lots of salt air, and I will likely put some bedliner on certain areas of the bumper for protection against corrosion, and on flat surfaces I might step on.

    Tldr:
Going mid travel. Starting with armor first.

So almost a year since I updated this, but I am sticking with my game plan. Armor almost done.

    So far
CBI T3 aluminum bumper with mid grille guard installed

Pelfreybuilt high clearance rear bumper installed.

Pelfrey front skid, mid skid, rear skid, gas tank skid installed

    Mobtown sliders, in transit...

Ok so small update. Finally got my mobtown sliders and installed them. Great product. I ordered mine with kick out, set at 10 degrees, and powder coated. The powdercoat is awesome! It's non skid and very nicely textured. Not to grippy or scratchy but just right.

The issue that needed remedy was how to install my high clearance pelfreybuilt transfer case skid with the midtown sliders. The thing is that the skid install calls for drilling a half inch hole thru the bottom of the frame to bolt in the rear sides. Well it would have been really hard because the mobtown sliders cover that area. So I would need to drill thru frame and slider plate. Not gonna happen. I looked at it and found that the flat rear section of the transfer case skid lined up with the rear most bolt of the clamp section of the sliders just inboard of the frame rails. So I drilled 3/8" holes and then notched the skid. And damn it worked!
