Stop sale on 2017 Tacoma's

I still don't think this will solve it though...we've had people on here that have had their diffs replaced and they still make noise. Makes me think it's a design flaw.

 

Vancouver Islander here. My rear diff is being completely replaced on my 17 DCOR. My service rep in Victoria told me that "a few months ago we might have been telling people the noise was normal. But our stance has since changed in it."
There's still hope for us!

In my experience, while working at Toyota, PDIs are normally accomplished prior to a vehicle being offered for sale (so there are almost certainly several Tacomas at my local dealer that could have been delivered last night but not this morning, without the inspection). And while I agree the inspection, again with no findings, will not prevent immediate delivery the inspection still must be done prior to customer delivery on untitled units. Hence the term "stop sale" being accurate and not "fake news" OR OP "making up" stuff.

 

Without being familiar with the design on these 3rd gens, I would imagine it's not much different than ford or GM. A cover with silicone all around it as the gasket with no physical gasket actually in place. Now unless there is a gasket in place it sounds like these were simply undertightened (something Toyota is fairly notorious for, for some reason). Tightness should be torqued to german spec. Guttentight. There is seriously no reason to torque a diff cover to spec. Unless there is some circumstance I am not aware of exists.

I missed a page on the recall notice. It does say specifically "stop sale" if the rear diff is leaking upon inspection until there's a remedy.

 

Doesn't it say between axel & differential? So are we talking about the same area?

Seems strange... why would some be affected and not others? I'm going in for my 15k service soon, so I'll definitely be mentioning this regardless.

EDIT: Truck was built May 2016 in Baja... smack dab in the middle of the recall period.
