factory antenna for gps?

Does anyone know if the built-in sat antenna in the '09 or '10 models is strictly s-band or if it's multiband and capable of feeding a gps unit as well?

Alternately (and a bit more technical), does anyone know if an S-band antenna will provide any useful boost when connected to a portable gps?

I haven't noticed any reception issues so far in the truck, but I'm starting to think that as long as I've got the antenna and don't plan to use ot for XM/Sirius anytime soon that it couldn't hurt to use it for something if it's suitable.

I talked to Garmin shortly after posting this. They confirmed that an S-band antenna won't do anything for GPS.

Not sure where to go to find out if there's also a gps-band antenna built in, when I asked Toyota "tech support" a simpler question (who's the manufacturer of my factory head unit in this case) and they couldn't do more than try to guess, so I'm assuming that the capabiliity of their antenna is nowhere near their wheelhouse.

So far I haven't had any reception issues with my GPS sitting on the console/passenger seat, and have a fancy (CA has made it nearly impossible to legally mount anything in a useful location) windshield mount on order, so I likely won't need an extra antenna anyway.

 

Thanks for the update. My need is slightly different... I wanted to use this antenna to plug into my aftermarket AVIC-X710BT instead of mounting the ones that come with. In a post somewhere on here the connection looks very similar.

 

I purchased an antenna for my gps from The GPS Store that looks just like an XM antenna and have had no problems. It just plugs into the side of the GPS and I have the cord routed through the 3rd brake light.
