You are correct that there are some differences in the roof rack Toyota offered over the years, PT278-35140 is the current part number that Toyota sells for the 2005-2017 roof rack, this current part number was manufactured and sold starting in 2013 and replaced PT278-35130.

PT278-35050 is the original number, it was replaced by PT278-35130, which was subsequently replaced by PT278-35140 which is the current part number for all 2005+ Tacomas. It is the only part number stocked.

I bought the new rack and for what it's worth I feel like it was a waste of money. Looks cool, feels like plastic. Plan on upgrading to something that's actually functional in conjunction with a bed rack. On the other hand, the money I spent on the TRD pro grill was the best money by far. Has absolutely no function whatsoever but makes me happier than almost anything else except The Relentless fabrication bumper!

I don't especially like the looks of the OEM rack but I have it and use it for my kayak so it was well worth the money to me. And I'm told that the 100 LB limit applies only when the truck is in motion. Stopped you can go a lot more so mounting a RTT is possible with it.

Use it to haul my SUPs, extension ladder and gives me an additional anchor to secure bed loads taller than the cab. When stowed its more aerodynamic than most others.

It's not the best out there but it's also not bad.

I have the oem roof rack. I bought it to carry a step ladder. It looks great and carries my step ladder. If you get it, make sure you silicone around the mounting holes. Don't trust the gaskets they give you. I did and had to take it back off and silicone. Torrential rain and zero leaks.

Roof racks in my opinion take away from the look of the Tacoma.

I use the hell out of mine.

I also have removable 60" aero racks on my camper shell. I'm pretty meticulous about tracking mileage, and I get 1-2 less mpg highway with rack bars on the camper shell. Having racks on the cab that quickly fold is very useful. They're silent and don't affect mpg when folded back, and are there in 3 seconds when you need them. I find myself using them most frequently to secure the bow lines on boats that are tied down to the camper shell. I love having no ropes in front of me when traveling and the load is super secure laterally. I love the look of the full length Prinsu racks, but I cannot personally justify the additional noise and fuel consumption.

Also, I can confirm that the static load is well above 100 pounds. I stand on mine when filling deer feeders and I weigh about 200 pounds.

We actually like the look of the OEM roof rack on our black Tacoma DCLB (makes it look kinda like a big black "Transformer"). :transformer:
When we purchased our Tacoma about a month ago, the dealer quoted us $620 for them to install one. That wasn't going to happen. Purchased an OEM rack - Toyota Part #PT278-35140 (NOT an "OEM-style") through an Ebay seller for $260 shipped. Spent about 2 hours installing while working on a couple Bud lites (any more and I might have ended up installing it upside down and backwards).
Is it the best rack out there? Of course not, but it will definitely fit our recreational needs. I guess it comes down to the rack's intended purpose and your budget.

Doesn't work if you have OEM Tonneau Rails.

Dents in roof from poorly loaded canoe. Broken side mirror from blown transfer truck tire. Scuffed up front bumper from thinking I was still in a corolla. Graham cracker embedded upholstery from a crazy kid.
I didn't particularly care for the stock roof rack at first, but I gave in and installed it to help carry my canoe and kayaks. It was easy to install and works great so far.
